Hey everyone. I am 27 and relocating to San Francisco for my job, actually Hayward CA 94545. I don't know anyone there or really anything about the breaks, except that you won't catch me at Mavericks. I've read up a little on Ocean Beach and the HMB Jetty, but don't know too much. I've been surfing for three years now and I can handle myself. I'm not saying I'm Occy but I'm not a moron. To anybody from SFO who might not want to tell me the good spots to surf, I understand, but I am respectful. What neighborhoods should I look at near Hayward that I can be close to a break that I'll be able to surf consistently? What I loved about LB NY was that I could do dawn patrol before work, and I would like to be able to do the same in San Fran a couple of times a week. Appreciate it.
get a bigger board for those currents, ob is a wicked paddle out. fort point is fickle but fun when it hits, watch for the big rock, gets tough at low tide.
Can't help with the 'hood search, but I used to live between Santa Cruz and Frisco, and all I will say is...have fun! Ridiculous surf out there, and most (though not all) people in the water are pretty chill. There's a reason for that, of course. The sharks, cold water, and big-a$$ surf scare away the posers, so the locals don't need to worry about doing that themselves. I surfed by myself out there 90% of the time, and spent a lot more time wishing I had some company in the water than I did fighting crowds. It can get a little lonely at times, but you will have PLENTY of chances to push the limits of your surfing when the winter comes. Enjoy and good luck!
Hayward is about 35 miles from the beach. There's not too many spots around SF, and none of them are secret anymore, although Ft. Point and some others are pretty localized due to crowding. Pacifica or HMB are going to be your best bet from Hayward. A quick internet search or google search is all your gonna need. Even better, take a drive down highway 1 when there's swell and start keeping a surf log.
