Nice. I am playing with a Larivee cutaway I bought several years ago. But just picking some blues. My Classical guitar playing is long gone, regrettably. If I come throughout this life again I will take Classical Guitar playing on for a career.

Larivee are very nice guitars. I've been wanting an OM size Larivee or Martin.

I agree with rcarter. When i picked up bass i had the Internet but decided not to go that route. Picked up a book and learned theory (at least a little) and jammed with others creating original music as i stated earlier in this thread. That's where it's at man. That's what a REAL musician is.

Me and my buddy the drummer i mentioned had this crazy guitar player jam with us once. We never played with him before. So he sits down and starts playing these crazy Metallica solos and what not perfectly. He was good. Damn. So we're like alright. Now let's jam. My buddy attests with a beat. I join in with a bass line. Guitar player looks like a dear in the headlights. No idea what to do. Didn't even have a clue as to where to begin. Point being, he could learn a tab and play it perfectly. But that's not being a musician. He had no theory whatsoever. He's looking down at his fret board like he's never held a guitar before. You need to have a clue.

I used bass guitar for dummies and a few others but honestly the for dummies book was the best. Don't know about the guitar version but I'd give it a shot. It's pretty cheap

Great points for sure. I like being creative and just going with what sounds / feels good usually.

Nice RC. You get those at Fat Sound? And WTF happened with that place??? The tech they had there (Mark) was fantastic. He did some great work on my stuff.

    Some pics of my setup.

Couple of my electrics. My main ones I play, black one is my primary. Red I use for lower tunings.

Everything runs into the mackie (16 XLR inputs) and straight into Cubase by firewire.

Yup, ran into some clowns like that as well. One of the bands I was in out in Seattle we auditioned this guy and he was trying to be the funky bassmaster, none of his sh!t even remotely fit what we were doing. It was like, dude, are you even focking listening to what we're doing? Did you even listen to any of our songs? This ain't P-funk, ya focking dildo.

Funny thing was one of the gigs we played he showed up randomly. I didn't even recognize him until the drummer pointed out "there's the funky bassmaster!". That was a wild gig, a guy looking like Randy the Macho Man Savage got in a fight with our bass player in the middle of the set. Was freaking awesome.

I bet I've bought more than 10 grand of equipment over the years. I play bass in a band that has been together in some form or another for close to 20 yrs. Played guitar before that. Started at 16 when I got grounded for 3 months. I want to downsize some but I can never seem to let anything go. The best thing I've seen lately equipment wise are the lightweight, small bass amps! My GK rig is awful heavy at closing time. My bass strings are 2 years old but I can change the tone a lot with the GK head. I got all theses effect pedals and only use a compressor most of the time but I still can't part with them. Surf all day rock all night!

Ha, not rock stars, never will be, but never expected to be so it's all good. Free beers and a good crowd is all I need, I do it for the enjoyment, nothing else.

Yeah, I've dropped a dime or two over the years. But the nice thing about this setup is it actually saves us money in the long run. Instead of having to pay for studio time to record, we can do everything here. I've got a good enough setup so that when I send the raw tracks to my mixing engineer they're studio quality and he can use them. So instead of having to burn $$$ in the studio we can spend it on quality mixing and mastering which is where a lot of guys go cheap, and it ends up burning them badly. You spend all this time and $$$ getting good stuff down then send it to some cut-rate guy and it comes back sounding like a$$. And a good mixing engineer and mastering guy is waaaaay worth it. That's where they can really make it shine. And they have access to that $20k vintage 1970's all tube Massenburg compressor and stuff like that, stuff I will never be able to afford. I've actually done a test before to try mix it out as best I could and could never get it as good as what our guy does, but he told me it wasn't a problem with my technique, I just didn't have that high dolla' equipment to work with at that stage.

The other part of it is we're never pressed for time. All the other bands I was in we'd book studio time and if it ain't done, then you either pay for more time or just live with it. And there's always something you want to go back and redo. With this we not only record every min of every practice so we capture any jams that come out, but we can take our own sweet time getting the tracks down before we ship them out to our mix eng.

If I ever get tired of this though and sell it off, I've got a couple surf trips paid and then some. Everything but the black LP, I just can't ever give that one up

Right on man. I hear ya about not being able to let go. I've still got pedals I've had 20+ yrs and never play, but just never get around to ditching them. I use almost no effects now anyways, wah pedal, echo in a couple parts on a couple songs, and an octave down for one tune, but otherwise it's pretty much just straight up sound.

Hear ya on the rig being heavy too. But it's nice when you're playing a gig and the soundman either sucks balls or the equipment sucks. We pretty much just play loud as fock so we can always hear each other on stage (just like practice) and mainly only run vox through the monitors. I gave up years ago having to depend on some crap PA or some sound guy who's off getting a taco and ya can't hear jack sheeet on stage.

Surf all day rock all night sounds good to me man!

That's what's up man! When everybody from SI finally gets together for Thanksgiving at Clemson's we're going to have to throw a bash and your band will be the entertainment, beers and herb on me!

Werd. Just need the date and what time we go one.

Hey since it's not a club we could learn and do some covers, some Cro-Mags for Archy, some Suicidal Tendencies for SCREWBY, some Bad Brains for LBCrew.

Better make sure you're insurance is paid up Clemmy...
