IMHO It takes a mixture of confidence and humility to be a decent musician.

It's funny though, you ever read those techy descriptions they put in some tab books? Stuff like "his effortless use of the augmented fifth..." I have a friend who's a classically trained musician (keyboards) and he once wrote up a description of something I wrote that was like that for a laugh. From the description you'd think I was some classical guitar guru when in reality I was just screwing around and no idea or plan for what I was doing.

in high school, I learned just enough chords to play Neil Young songs. Tried taking a beginning music theory class in community college, but had no idea what was going on the whole time.

A decade later, I bought "Guitar Theory Basics" (old REH video by Don Latarski) from Guitar Center and a lot of the subconscious stuff from the music theory class started to click. That sparked a motivation frenzy where I learned all the basic stuff and wrote a handful of original songs.

Combine the basics with a capo and some fingerstyle picking* and you've got entertainment for a lifetime.
