Yes, you can go too big/thick

I bought a board off whiskey based on price. It was 6'0 x20-7/8x2-3/4
Way too much float. Sold it for $40 more than I got it for. The guy that bought it was about 250 lbs.

In all seriousness, I would scope out a used one. If you don't like it, sell it for the same price you pick it up for.
If you like it, sell it and get a custom based off those dims

Yes definitely you can oversize a short stubby board. I'm 5'9" 150 pounds, and have had mini simmons type boards in the following lengths:
    4'11" 5'4" 5'7" 5'8" and 5'9"

In the kinds of waves you mentioned...knee - stomach and soft non-barreling conditions, hands down the 4'11" and 5'4" are way more fun. The 5'7" - 5'9" are cool boards - I still ride them - but feel "cruisey" and oversized and not much easier to paddle in or surf.

I'm not saying get a 4'11" by any means, how short you want to go depends on a lot of factors. I'm saying YES you can oversize a mini simmons/groveler/fishy shape absolutely.

I picked this board up earlier this summer and have ridden it a LOT.

    5'4" x 21.5" 2 7/16"

KILLS it in soft 2 foot thigh-waist high mush. Most fun board I've ridden in years in small waves.
It's very light for a poly board, but seeing how much I like it, I kind of wish I had been willing to spend the extra coin and get it in EPS/Epoxy

Thanks for the reply Mitchell. I'm 5'8, 140-150LB. The board you just posted looks very similar to what I'm looking for with very similar dims.

I'd love to pick one up used to figure that style board out first. Unfortunately I hadn't seen many in my area. That's why I'm asking you guys so many questions. Normally I know what I want/need but I'm a little in the dark here. Considering Mitchell's responses and my thoughts though, I'm thinking I'm on the right track.

Luckily I'm not planning on pulling the trigger immediately, so I have time to figure this out and talk to my shaper. I really appreciate the responses, I thought for sure I would get sarcastic posts in reply. You guys have been very informative and helpful. Thank you

I have a ton of short stubby boards and a Simmons but in SMALLER stuff I wish I had a faux mini long board or a lost couch potato type. I hate putting the boards on the roof so my LB comes out twice a year maybe. With all the stubby boards I still can't get in early, and on weak thigh high summer sheet I can barely have fun--- everybody else is long boarding and I'm taking table scraps for waves. So the stubbys are great to an extent on small days if a plague wiped out all the other surfers. A Simmons is a true slump buster and a lot of fun on good days. And a Simmons or stubby fishy SB is good in choppy stuff too. Don't be afraid to add more thickness in the chest. I'm rambling.
