Does anybody know how cold the NJ winters get (i m talking about the water). Because i went yesterday and it was 51 degrees, and i was fine. I m not gonna buy another suit though, i just wanna know how long i can go for.
The past few winters have generally been warmer... but you can expect water temp to get down to between 34-36 degrees for sure. And then add a nice 20 degree air temp and it's cold as balls for sure...
typically the really cold conditions don't occur until january through march since it take the water longer to cool down than the air. like stated above, the last few winters have been above normal but if we got at or below normal temps you will def need the heavy gear. You need it anyway if you want any kind of decent time in the water even with above normal temps.
NJNick, the cold don't get here until February and March. Nothing like 35 degree water, 20 degree air, and a 25 knot wind blowing to make your balls hide up in your chest cavity for a week. If you're going to surf all year you'll need the heavy gear for sure.
During the cold winters, you'll see the buoys dip around 38-39. You'll feel a big difference between 50 degree waters and upper 30s. Hopefully, this winter stays mild like last winter.
The water isn't the worst part. With a good 15 degree air and winds... the water feels fine. When you go to get your suit off... if you gotta do it at the car like most people. Thats the worst part.
i always take my suit off when i get home, not worth catching pneumonia over, just bring extra towels for the car ride
