I actually really enjoy mags. If there was a few guys on LI writing a surfing mag, id buy it. I still grab the ESM when at a shop (well i guess not anymore, they are done right? ), and still have subscriptions to surfer and surfing mags. But those two suck. I usually flip through and am done. Every once in awhile there is a good article in there though. It's sad that mags are dead now. But that don't mean you got to follow the trend. If there's a good mag pot there, buy it and enjoy. Who cares if its not "cool" anymore
We started up with no advertisers. We are hoping to gain some, but for now we are relying on a loyal surf community to buy the magazine.
I definitely see it could be a gamble, but come on. You are acting like $10 (including shipping) is really going to break the bank. If you truly hate the magazine, we'd give you the money back. I guarantee you won't hate it, it's worth supporting the industry.
Thanks for the insight. I think your post, as well as many of the posters, were right when saying print is dead. However, I will qualify this... Have you seen the vinyl resurgence? It is even becoming cool to collect old tapes now. I think holding onto our media will never completely die. How can you ever feel for something that you've only ever seen on your phone? Holding something means it is 1) real and 2) yours. I think people are starting to want those 2 things more and more. Plus, look at it like this... a chick walks into two rooms... One modern room with blank space, white walls, and a couch. Or the second room with stacks of surfing magazines, DVDs, and vinyl. I'd say the more interesting dude lives in that second room. And I'd say that second dude is making out with that chick way easier than the other dude. Maybe I am wrong, but that's just my opinion. In short, that ownership idea is where the mag is coming from. We want surfing culture to be something you can hold. And we are definitely doing this to get chicks--the middle finger makes us seem edgy.
You got balls, kid. If I lived in the EC I'd buy your mag. I saw some of your content and liked it. If a "Rambler" for the PNW existed, I'd be stoked. But the guys around here generally get pissed when they see cameras lol. Good luck, I like your attitude.
Lol LB, I'm with you man. You don't put a mag up to your mouth (well except maybe a certain sweller or two). I get surfers journal, and a couple hunting mags. I like the journal it has some classic essays, stories, technical and innovative board shaping articles, nostalgic stuff, and good glossy pics. I think it's worth it. (Side note, I was taking care of biz one morning scoping a journal and I tried to enlarge a photo with my fingers...techno brainwashed I guess!). I liked ESM...cool it was free but obviously that biz model was tough...even with the newspaper quality. I think I might throw $10 at this and check it out.
Ok, I definitely understand where you are coming from. I will upload a few pictures of the magazine in the SHOP section. They can be found once you click into the Fall 2017 Edition of Rambler Magazine on the SHOP page. I was reluctant to put any pdf versions of it online. I think this totally defeats the purpose of printing a magazine. Why would people buy the print if they can see the same thing online for free? We try to keep our web content and print content different. I believe that surf print died because surfing magazines published ALL of their content online. We try to differentiate between the two so there is some sort of surprise when you read the magazine.
Upload half articles and leave the visitor wanting more.....crap like that. Don't give away your hard work but also don't expect to sell something sight unseen in a competitive market. Then..if you build a customer base you never do it again. But for the start you gotta sell your product, at this point I have no idea what it is or why I would buy it.
I get that. I shouldn't have said ESM was shit, because it absolutely was not. I was talking more about the paper quality as "shit". The guys at ESM worked really hard to keep that thing going, and I totally applaud what they created. I think that anyone who puts themselves out there is rad. ESM was rad. However, I had issue with their (free) business plan, paper quality, and even some of the content in the later years.

I'm with bubs on the whole 10 dollar bit... I don't think 10 dollars is cheap or "it's just 10 dollars".... 10 bucks is a good amount of money. I could buy a new catspaw for 10 bucks. Personally, this is just me, I may be willing to throw 3 bucks at it... but not 10, especially without seeing it prior... good on you for posting a little on the web- its smart especially in the beginning...
My comment got deleted so here's the uh...censored version. The magazine may be great, but you clearly don't understand business models. This ain't charity. I like my ten bucks more than i like a hypothetical magazine, plus stop with the "it's only 10 bucks" "baloney". We live in a nice area and we are lucky. It doesn't always work like that. I can remember days and times where I WISH I had ten dollars. Its insulting to throw something in our face we don't need and then point out how cheap it is....again, sample content and a reason for us to buy. Scan a few pages, show us what you're doing, what your vision is.
Considering your audience, URN, your success will thrive on bikinis and thongs. Get to it!!! Surfing itself is for queers......
With all the great free content on the web, why would anyone pay for this magazine? Just being honest. Stranded in the airport with a dead battery in my phone or no wiFi access is the only plausible scenario I can come up with. ESM was great but in recent years I wasn't even bothering to pick their magazine up......and it was free. Perhaps their mistake was that the content on their website was better and more timely than their print edition which rendered their print edition useless. There was a time when I couldn't wait for the next new issue of ESM to hit the shop.
I personally enjoy reading mags, particularly surf mags. And I agree with the tangible bit, I like having an item I can physically hold in my hand. I use my phone for looking at surf pictures and videos, not staring at online articles. I stare at a computer enough as it is. But, I still like reading. I get surfers journal every now and then. Best quality surf magazine there is. It’s a combo of the pictures and quality literature. It does, however, comes with a price tag of over $16 which is steep for a magazine. I could get a book for that price. In my opinion, $10 isn’t all that bad for a magazine in today’s age - considering the price points of the two other primary surf mags that are still in production. Now $5 and we would totally be talking. After I give this last surfers journal a shot, I might try out your mag. And if I had any advice it would be to not become complacent; diversify the image and do something in addition to magazines, e.g., video compilations, online community, events, etc. You need to be multidimensional to survive. Best of luck!
