That large pronounced fin seems to be that of the "sandbar shark" species. Usually pretty harmless.....
I go down to Space Coast a couple times a year and always hop right by New Smyrna aka the "Reunion Island" of Florida. Despite its consistency for "hot-doggin", the gang of sharks there are absurd. They're just meanf*ckers down there. I give props to all the locals there that deal wit it, braver than I. Only reason i haven't surfed Ponce Inlet is cuz of the nearby leftover vibe when thinkin of what's going down at New Smyrna
Yeah, there seems to be some bait around.
A view from inside the bait ball.
Last week early in the week pre swell, there were some cool little pods that came down the beach, then they got bigger and bigger. I've been surfing up in Juno and points north and doing laps in a pool. Lots of toothy critters, including a few bluefish - the piranha of the sea - are in the mix right now. Was up surfing in the refuge Saturday, did not see any bait at all, they must all be on Singer Island.
I've surfed both countless times without incident, I have seen them, but have been really lucky. Ponce is just as bad, they're right next to each other across the inlet. It's just bad luck, wrong place / wrong time. I saw lots and lots of activity in the water down here in Melbourne. My buddy was on his SUP and said he saw a 6 footer swim right by us. Nothing I could do about it, so I just kept surfing.
florida probably is the shark attack capital of the world, just a guess,it probably is tho lol.sharks might be small but theres hundreds of ppl in the water and hundreds of them. that video in that link,u see when they go to the aerial view those guys are surfing right over the sharks like nothing, and theres a lot of them
The surfline cam shows one of the dudes limping out of the water. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/series-of-victims-bitten-in-succession-in-new-smyrna-beach-three-shark-attacks-on-surfers-in-three-hours-in-fl_141729/
The water there is usually pretty murky, so you can't really see anything unless you are up on an SUP or in a helicopter or something. Murky water, plus lots of people in the water, plus lots of little sharks coming out from the inlet = accidents waiting to happen. You knowz how I roll! I gotz to be blingin, nah mean?
