well I've never surfed up in fire island but you're probably in just as good of a spot as any on long island. my only advice would be to follow the crowd at chow time.... or in other words, when there is surf, paddle out where others are and be cool.
Fire Island I surfed Fire Island last year for the first time last year (Ocean Beach area) and it wasn't very good. No sandbars whatsoever. Basically had to surf some sketchy shore break. I hear it changes a lot each year so hopefully you'll have better luck. If you can't find good surf close by check other parts of the island, I hear it varies a lot in different areas. I don't know too many people that surf there. It is a hassle to get a board there (most ferries won't let you carry on, so you need to wait for the cargo ferry). You're best bet is just to find someone surfing and go out near them. I talked to some people when I was in the water and they seemed friendly. Good luck.
my friends summer up there sometimes. no jetties so surf is drifty and dumpy. but no crowds, especially now before the season starts. lot of beach so i'm sure there's a sandbar or two that will produce fun waves. just gotta look.
So your from England & you are living in fire island anddddd you ride a longboard. All signs point to Geyyyyyyyyyy. Just kidding, find a pack of longboarders and tag along
