Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and love it! My son and I share a birthday Friday 7/22 I turn 48 and he turns 16. We share a love of the water and we are heading to the east coast from upstate New York Friday to search for waves. Willing to anywhere from New Jersey to South Carolina. We have surfed warm water winter spots but want to experience the Atlantic and wondered what a few suggestions might be? I understand that we will be "tourists" and summer surfers to most but we are respectful and totally get "local rules"
    Thanks

Again, welcome. Nothing much down here in VA Beach until maybe Friday. Been pretty flat. Water around 80, Air temps in mid 90s. Best time is usually early AM if tide is right. After 10AM during the summer, surfing is restricted to specific areas. Sort of a "dogs and surfers stay off the beach" attitude.
My family and wife's are from Rome-Syracuse area.

Good luck, and happy birthday to you both. No matter where you go, the trick will be getting up early, before the wind comes up, the lifeguards show up, the beach badge checkers start patrolling, etc. (See DP threadde). For spots, try using Wannasurf or Surfline.

The search is half the fun...

First off I think it is really cool you are doing something with your son. I am the same age as you and have a son who is 17 and surfing is something we both love to do along with skiing. So hard to connect with your kids these days since they are buried in their phones, and their fantasy real life video game mentality.
BUT onto your question, many on here are right, the waves in the summer around here on the east coast are pretty tame right now. Also alot of spots either have designated surf areas or no surfing at all during the day unless you come before or after the lifeguards come or leave. Do your research and if you have the time maybe you would want to hit a few spots along the way. I am in the NH area but good spots around here that allow surfing in the summer are Jenness in Rye NH, The Wall in North Hampton. Also I hear good things about long sands in York and also Footbridge in Oguinquit. Of course I still think your best shot at summer surf would be Cisco and Nobadeer on Nantucket Island but it is expensive to stay there and crowded this time of year. Just suggestions and again it has been pretty mellow around here as of late. Too bad you couldnt hold off your trip until Sept Oct... Just my .02 cents...

Hi and happy birthday. You should totally go to Belmar, it's never flat and never crowded. Can you swing by Pennsylvania and pick me up?

Thank you all for the replies! Water sports have created a wonderful bond with my entire family and a very special one with my son! I'm sure this trip will create a lifelong memory even if we just straddle the boards and get chased off by lifeguards! I'm going to keep searching...can I assume the belmar suggestion was a joke? Keep the ideas coming please! Won't break our spirit

Every one is right. check the winds and get on it early.. maybe stop by a local surf shop and see if they are willing to help you out,,, you never know you just might need a stick of wax! start looking at forecast models of where you might be headed it should give you some insight for your expectations. Happy birthday.

Be careful, roselandwiz, this place has broken a few unsuspecting spirits in the past. But as far as waves, seek and ye shall find, happy birthday, and keep them kids in the water! My mom did that for me and I am forever grateful.

Just don't let them teach their friends to surf, the books are closed right meow.

Happy B-day. Not too much surf right now. Maybe consider alternate water-craft; handplane, SUP, skimboard or LB.

Don't go to Sea Isle City, Strathmere, or the South end of Ocean City NJ. There are no longer waves there anymore. Seriously. Replenishment has killed it for awhile. Unless it's around low tide (Zach) and there is a tropical system. You can cram you and your boy into the North end of OC before 9 AM with every other f@cking surfer that lives within 30 miles or drink a lot like I'm doing right now.
    Happy B-day fella.
