I have been riding a soft tip for a few years. Ow I am looking to get something a little smaller. I am a bigger rider 6'4 and 210 lbs. soon to be a little bit lighter around 200lbs. I am looking at a surftech spade in a 7'8. Has anyone rode one before? Any other board recommendations. The winter season is coming up here in Santa Cruz so I am looking to get a new board soon.

"The Spade is the perfect alternative for the surfer who needs a little extra foam, but wants to keep the racy lines and sharp edges of their favorite shortboard to maintain an agressive riding style."

There's no way anyone who actually surfs writes this stuff.

You'd need kevlar gloves to carry such a boart to the beach... sounds dangerous.

Whoa, you don't like riding a soft tip. Maybe he's need a blue pill. Now, you are thinking of riding a spade's tip. I can't answer there but I hear a spade's tip is a lot longer. There are a couple of ladies on here. Might want to ask them if they have any experience with the hard tip from a spade. Get the bung hole ready.

I am just over using my catch surf odysea 9'0. I want to step down to a shorter board.

You get a break for now... Intro threade preaze?

My advise would be go to a local shaper, and go for fun board dimensions for first "real" board. Surfingdad, did your kids start surfing first? Intro tread dude...

if you get that board in the 7 foot range you'll probably be ok... surftechs have extra float compared to other boards. just buy it used, not really worth the money for a new one since its not a true fiberglass board. I never surfed one- but it looks like a basic thruster shape so should be ok from switching from a foam longboard to that

I agree with the previous posts. Definitely go for something in the 7'6" to 8" range. I bought a hardly used 7'6" Ron Jon for $125 after I progressed from my foamie. That carried me for quite some time before I moved to a shortboarte'. It got in early and caught basically everything. It'll be a slight adjustment but you'll get there. And if you have the cash, definitely get a locally made toy. There's nothing like your own custom. Plus, I imagine in your neck of the woods you can buy them pretty cheap.
