    Hi guys!
I'm new to surfing and had a few questions for you guys. The only surfing I have done is SUP(stand up paddle). I really enjoyed it and want to get into it more. My first experience with traditional surfing will be later this year at the end of August. I have a trip planned to Nicaragua. I will be staying at a surf ranch in san juan del sur. So I guess I'm looking for any advice/tips you can give me. Anything about surfing in Nicaragua, or just surfing in general will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Stay away from surf ranch in San juan del sur

The surf ranch is not for surfers...unless your goal is to stand around the bar and get drunk...they nickel and dime you to death. make it hard to use the shuttle to Remanso. Hard to use one of their really, really banged up boards, etc. We ended up getting our own boards and using the taxi service...among many, many, many other issues...but we came to surf and in the end they didn't really fit the bill for that.

I guess if you want to travel to Nicaragua for a half-assed skate park, it would be an ok place to stay. Owner and front desk staff are not to be trusted. Beware.

Security at the place is good, your stuff is safe. Rooms are 4 walls and the roof doesn't leak, but the doors do. There's a chlorinated pool so that's about the only decent thing there.

Oh, don't be fooled...the air pad drop isn't operational and hasn't been for some time. Employees said it is permanently broken.

    HA, good one, Spicoli...

Kindbud, I can tell by your Swellinfo handle that you already have half the battle won, due to your pursuit of the sticky nugs. It's all cake from there, dude.

If you want general advice....well......just surf as much as you can. Experience is the name of the game and you already consume marijauna, so just enjoy the ride. You'll never get better at surfing from a computer. People can tell you this, and tell you that, but unless you actually go out and do it, nothing will be gained. Learning on your own is the way to go.

Oh, watch out for wetsuits though. Thems very tricky pieces of rubber. If you do have a wetsuit question, instead of the computer, head to your nearest core surf shop and ax them. Look for the older zen guys, they'll know what's up. Don't buy online, support your bros at the local shop.

Shoot, I was just checking out where you're from so I could recommend a surf shop......and you're from Michigan. Yoowza !! I always wanted to go to Michigan. Can't help you with shops there. You Great Lakes guys are cool. Make sure you go exploring this fall. Don't leave surfing to just oceanic trips. You have a wave producing lake in the region so make sure you hit it when you can. Wow, Ann Arbor, huh? A marijauna friendly community.

The Guerrilla Warfare continues on any thread about Nicaragua. Unreal. It would be so great if Lauren Ginsburg would chime in.

If you want a great book about banditos, South America, drug smuggling and crazy talk, try Cosmic Banditos by Allan Weisbecker (you in particular, PJB - one review says he out-gonzos Hunter S. Thompson - I bet you'd like it).

Sorry to derail the thread but it seemed pertinent.

Kingbud, the best advice I can give you is to get ripped before your trip. Surfing is a WORK OUT and if you aren't in surfing shape you're gonna have a bad time. Also, if you french fry when you're supposed to pizza you're gonna have a bad time.

Yeah, I've meant to read that(AW's Cosmic Banditos). I've read his other thangs. I kind of dig his, "I'm old, bitter, angry at everyone and disillusioned with the world," thing. Plus, he surfs.

I actually sent him a few emails back in 2005, and he responded which I give him credit for. Ha, he yelled at me because my first email to him, I had drank two bottles of cough syrup and couldn't believe that I was mildly tripping. I was forced into exile in Northern Virginia and was going nuts for real drugs. So, I heard aboot this cough syrup thang and gave it a whirl. I think I talked to him aboot Tyra Banks or something ?? Well it annoyed him !! LOL. He told me not to email him when I was high. LOL

Yeah, he should be a way bigger writer than he is. He's got the chops. And then there are all of these Oprah Book of the Month losers who can't write for sh!t. Ahh, the world is so unfair.

I have to get around to reading Thompson one of these days, too. Jeez, I procrastinate too much, and get cuaght up with watching things like Teen Mom. I don't know........I keep seeing quotes from Hunter Thompson and people act like they are prophetic or something, and they just don't do nothing for me. But I'll have to check him oot. Anybody have suggestions of which book to start with?

Oh Pinkstink, good South Park reference. Those dudes are the best. They satirize all the right stuff. They're the best.

Agreed! People who think South Park is stupid are stupid because it's all genius.

Also, really cool that you're already familiar with Weisbecker. Someone on here recommended him to me.

But anyways, I haven't read a lot of Hunter S. Thompson's stuff but if you're looking to get a better idea about the man, the myth, the legend, The Gonzo Papers might be a good place to start. He was a journalist so most of his work is articles for magazines. The Gonzo Papers and the Gonzo Papers Part II are compilations of articles so it's a great way to get a sense of his writing. Also cool to get a weird historical perspective. Outside of those I've only read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I'd love to read his story about the Hell's Angels but haven't come across it yet. I also read the one about the Kentucky Derby but can't remember where. Anywho, enjoy!
