Trying to plan a trip to Nicaragua this coming March for a week or two. We are thinking about renting a truck and just traveling the west coast to get lost and find some spots. Anyone have any suggestions on locations to check out? Also, how safe is Nicaragua to travel around like that? I haven't heard to many bad stories, but my friend's cousin that lives down that way recently warned us about traveling there so I just wanted to get some peoples opinions/past experiences. I'm not concerned with your typical thievery type stuff, I just don't feel like getting kidnapped haha. Thanks for the help!

make sure you rent a toyota hilux. unbelievable truck. stay away from police. they are the enemy. place your boardbags flat with tailgate down and tied down in the pickup to avoid "gringo" detection when leaving managua. go to las salinas' general area to score good surf. that's all im saying.

There are a couple coves in and around San Juan del Sur where you will be the only ones there. I was down there a about 6 years ago in April, we took a boat from san juan del sur to a small cove north of the town and were the only people out in chest to head high waves for hours.

I second the police thing. If they do pull you over (which they will if they see a couple white guys in a car) give them 50 bucks and do not let them take your license.

its safe, march can be a good time bc the south swells are starting to pick up, if your there for 2 weeks ull score for sure. it can get gusty offshore winds that time of year and the water may get chilly from the upwelling so bring a top. up north it wont be as windy so if the forecast is calling for a 4-5 days of that, go up north during that part of the trip. tons of good waves all over the country. You may pulled over on the pan am with boards on your truck like DaMook said but out by the beach on the dirt roads youll be fine. i think rental cars also have a different license plate or a sticker or something. that plus the boards is the gringo giveaway.
