Steep beach. That's actually terrible if you actually get a big swell. Thing will be a 15 block close out in a hurricane swell. You want a sandbar that goes out far. Look how far out those waves are breaking in the recent southern cali shots. Look how far at puerto escondido breaks as another example. Also, you can't ride double overhead barrles in thigh deep water unless you want to be using a wheelchair in the future. But that being said, it's good to have a break like that for 3 feet at 8 second stuff. It makes it really fun
Dude they'll find them fine. I like the fact that most people aren't worried about getting recognition in ri and don't name spots in pics. Please don't go posting pics when it's really working and name the spot.
Thank god ri doesn't replenish it's beaches. I think that would be the last straw and I'd move. There's only a few beachies in ri that work and that's where I do most of my boogie boarding. We'd be totally screwed here if they did that since you need BIG swells for the rock reefs to really work and many of them aren't really that ideal for bodyboarding anyway(slow longboard waves)
Rhody's main advantage is wind. Geography of ri means we can handle many winds directions. We also handle hurricane swells better. NJ has a longer coast which probably means more breaks, but I'm not sure with all that replenishment stuff. I'm not super familiar with nj, so I'm not sure which is more consistent. RI is more exposed to sw swells obviously. So for summer surf, that's a really important thing.
From my experience...I have surfed in almost every state on the right coast...and a fair amount in nj...just my opinion, but the most consistent surf for frequency and size, obx. I would give my nod to the New England states for breaks...some places are just crazy good when it's going off...rocky coastlines and all kinds of point breaks. Love those places that I will keep nameless. As far as surf, nj reminds of my home break in md, not a place I would travel away from home if it's firing. Nothing wrong with the place, but my a** would head further north or to obx if I want to surf some place other then my home area.
See, I don't understand what's so bad about me posting pics of spots working when you just said all this important swell stuff about the area.
I didn't list specific spots! If you want to post spots like matunuck, go ahead. The place is a crowded zoo. Just don't post pics of less crowded spots(especially some of the fickle beach breaks) and it's all good.
Just put up the pic and say something like western ri rather than listing the specific spot. No harm in that!
It's been so bad at some spots in recent years during swell events that you can't even get a parking spot. Definitely gotten worse in recent times. I remember last year or year before during the first hurricane swell after summer crowds were almost as bad as hurricane bill and this swell wasn't something exceptional like that. I think the internet has made it worse with all the hype. Rhody has very few surf breaks in proportion to population. Especially when you consider that the majority of swell events don't light up some rock breaks. It's a tiny small coast and a huge part of the coast has no waves. Once you get past westerly, there are no descent consistent sandbars till you hit south kingstown. Then you have some in gansett, than you've got just the island on the other side of the bridge which is smashed by massholes! 2nd beach is insanely crowded. 1st beach is a little less crowded, but wave quality is less than 2nd.
I live in NJ now but I lived in the Naragansett/ Matunuck area for 3 years. NJ is more consistent for sure, but Rhody picks up south swells better especially with some west in them but you miss out on any swell with a northerly direction. The breaks up there are fun as hell from sick barreling beach break to long drawn out points, so many different kinds of setups, and more options with wind direction, I say I would rather live up there then down here, thats for sure.
You don't see the difference between saying "a few beach breaks in RI are good" and "look at this pic of Ruggles firing. Why is nobody out yet?" ???
I think the beachies are pretty crowded already. At least when I'm there every weekend. I barely even stop at Matunuck anymore. Just cuz there are so many people there and the last time I was there I duck dove under a guy whose fin almost frikin de-scalped me then some old guys came and were all grouchy and kept pulling everyone's leash. Personally, I only like it when its like 2-3 feet cuz theres only a couple guys there.
Much of ri crowded. It's all relative. I've seen 30 guys per peak at matunuck. So hundreds in the water for a few peaks. And their all surfers. No bodyboarders. You need an armor suit to go out there. And why they still make sharp fins is beyond me, especially when it's shown no increase in performance and only is a danger to both the user and the people around him. Also, the first couple of hurricane swells the past few years in fall have seen crowd conditions almost as bad at point judy as at matunuck.
soooooo I'm now waiting for the right swell to head up to Ruggles Avenue or Matanuk Point. Always looking for an adventure and something new to explore. Thanks dude. I'll be snaking you off that right in no time. Then i'll take your mother, Dorothy RISurfer, out for a nice seafood dinner, and NEVER call her again!
