It all really comes down to your skill level . If you can go leash less on a un crowded and not be afraid to hold on to your board as you get tossed in the mush then so be it . If you gonna bail your board when paddling out or if you on a wave that closes out on you wear a leash. If I'm on a log and its a handful of my friends I don't wear one . Its very rare that I lose my board to the beach. If its a bigger day Ill wear one cause it beats swimming to your board
First and foremost, Karma rules. I always try and give folks the benefit of the doubt 'cause I'm certainly gonna need it back later. I love kids and often take time to talk with em, show em how to catch a wave, etc. Kids are awesome, and I try to be one myself whenever possible. But... As an old fart who just got back surfin after leavin in the 70s, I find it tough to think I'm gonna lead to the end of civilization, am an anarchist, etc, if I ain't sportin a leash. Leashes had just been thought up, and I don't think were commercially available, back then. We called em kook cords. We made a few out of bungee cords, with surgical tubing for the ankle. It was a fun novelty most days. We'd wear em mostly on little days, but NOT big days. It really sucked on BIG days bein pulled through the water foot first by my leash after wiping out. Almost pulled my leg outa the socket a few times. We'd rather swim than play that. Of course surfers could swim back then. We had to. Yeah, I'm glad on Victory at Sea days now that I leashed it. Takes 10 minutes to swim in with the current and all. I'm gettin near 60 yrs old. Gotta admit that I'm still gettin used to that dang thing though. Parents, certainly take your munchkins swimming, but WATCH OUT for em. Don't pass that responsibility onto the surfers. Did this make any sense?
O'Reilly jumped on board, he must have been lurking. http://www.foxnews.com/transcript/2014/12/12/bill-oreilly-achieving-american-dream/ "you cannot walk around with a sense of entitlement -- that people owe you things. In our system nobody owes you anything."
What ever happen to Lee? You know... The stud. He said that he would give me a few waves, if I sat on the shoulder. he owes me some waves
Dude I knew you where still lurking! I hear you tho- I usually just post nonsense.... Hope your doing well and getting some waves bro!!
Bump Since Lee is hanging out with us today, I thought i'd resurrect one of the greatest threads in SI History!
Bump. New guys, read from the beginning. In two months the thread that made SI what it is (was?) will be 5 years old.
LOL Man, going back through this thread is like a time warp of a better time, a better place. One thing I noticed is how many people have come and gone and also a lot of people changed screen names. Everybody should change their names back to whatever it was when this thread was new and see if we can't lure some O.G.'s back on here!
