So I spent 10 days on sunset beach two summers a go. We were lucky to crash at a buddies house and I want to head back in the winter to maybe catch a decent swell rolling through. It's heavy when it hits winter there so I'm not really planning on surfing but more so go and rid some stress (just got through a gnarly divorce) watch some surf, snap some photos do some fishing and eat some awesome food ...enjoy the vibe. The difference in this trip is I'm planning on rolling solo and rent a van to crash in. Do you think I'll get hassled? Are there beaches I might be able to crash on ? I can afford a hotel etc but I'm wanting to go and see what happens and fly solo. Any tips, advice? thanks
maybe check out campgrounds or something- there are some parks on the eastern side not to far from the north shore- but unsure if you can stay all night. I think you may get hassled if you stay at big name spots... there are plenty of low key areas that you can find that would work. you can always do walmart parking lot too... lol ALSO- i would bring your board! Are you crazy???? there is always a smaller spot somewhere else if you don't want to surf big waves! and oh ya- im with the other guy, you can pick me up in Jersey

thanks guys, checked out the site but no dice. I think Im going to fly out and just figure it out. Shouldnt be any more of a hassle then any where else I'd assume as long as I stay away from well know spots overnight. If anyone else thinks of anything else let me know. Im pretty pumped round trip flight from OC is only 380 bucks and a van for the week is 200. Trip to the north shore for a week under 1k ??? We will see....

I live on maui, and its not like mainland, as long as you don't hurt anyone you can do whatever you like. Some spots require you to be fishing to spend the night, so just tie string to a stick and put it in the water, but again, cops don't really check that.. I camp all the time and never been asked for permits or anything. Just be respectful. That being said, oahu maybe not the same because its so populated (exactly why I don't go there) but in maui as long as your respectful you can dl your own thing. We do also have a broad spectrum of waves, you can watch jaws or honolua bay, and then surf lahaina same day if u like small waves. Pm if I can be of service.
$380 is a good price for round trip! I just spent $280 to go to kauai last weekend! Which BTW, if you like get in touch with nature and spiritual, kauai or maui may be more appropriate. Oahu has good surf, but sometimes bad vibes, so I hear.
From my experience, Oahu is not too much different. Two years ago in November, I spent the better part of a week sleeping in the rental car on Kam Highway. I switched back and forth between various low-key parking areas. I keep it VERY low-key and did not get bothered at all. Remember that things may be a little different in December. The ASP clowns will be in town, and it'll be a different (more hectic) scene. I think it'll be a great plan to stay on the East side if you have wheels and can drive around. Or, if you're willing to re-vamp the whole plan, you might want to think about staying at a hostel on the North Shore. There are a few cheap ones, but (again, it'll be December) prices may be higher than usual. I can give you the name of a good one if you're interested...just send a PM my way. See ya.
