Beachbreak, I'm a pretty emotional guy when it comes to family and friends...health, wellness and beyond.

man, I know there is absolutely nothing I could say that will change your situation. Honestly, I just felt the urge to convey to you, as a fellow surf monster, that I will be thinking about you from here on out.

Life is a blink of an eye. As much as we (humans collectively) think we have it all figured out, we don't!

I just want to let you know that here and now, I'm with you. I trust you have family and friends around you. PM if you would like. I hope the days are as peaceful as possible for you...

    Peace and love man!

Having been in the restaurant business for 30 years, I always felt like there was a certain culture... a restaurant culture... and only people in the business could understand. I guess it's like that in a lot of other industries, but I know there's no way to understand it unless you'd been there. Bourdain could articulate that better than anyone, and when he did, he helped create the "celebrity chef" culture he detested. He became what he hated, and I think he hated himself for that.... so much so that he murdered himself.

And to the dude who hates all teachers... all I have to say about that is that you are woefully ignorant. If all your experiences with public education and public school teachers has been bad, I feel for you, and you're not the only one. I understand where you're coming from. But some of the most compassionate, intelligent, skilled, talented, caring people I've ever had the privilege to meet and work with have been educators. I'd like you to me a few of them to perhaps soften the edge on that dagger you swing around so blindly.

Huh?? The fear of "God"??? True Religion?? Bible thumping??
It's the beginning of brainlessness. Too much hocus pocus, abra cadabra etc.. Ouiji Board works just was well. Ask the Pope.....
Now, if you care to believe....okey dokey!! But, as I have written here before, you might as well draw a pentangle on the floor, stand on it, chant 3 times "I summons thee" and see what happens.
    just opinion.....

I am not a papist, nor does the pope represent God. Nor do you obviously by your own dogma.

And yes i believe that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Okey-dokey, correct, just your opinion, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

We are here for bourdain, and discussing death and suicide.

A good deduction, but mere speculation unless he left a note or said something to someone.

And what does the teacher hater have to do with bourdain?
You are correct, and i myself am a teacher, but that was this thread, or just every post he posts on every thread?

Doubt it; he died years ago in my opinion.
It was reflected in his overzealous addition of tattoos which he added recently.

Yes, beachbreak... total speculation if were trying to answer the "why" question. But not speculation in general... those are his words, paraphrasing, of course. If you read his books and articles in addition to watching his shows... and if you saw him live, which I have... he talks a lot about how over-privileged he is, and how he admittedly had become one of the many celebrity chefs in a culture he himself helped cultivate, and loathed.

I learned many years ago not to ask the "why" question, because it really has no answer. Even when a note is left, I believe the question is never fully answered. That post by Val Kilmer suggests the same thing... why that day? why on that day was life so unbearable that you just couldn't get through the night, and start again the next day?

When the suicide of a family member touched my life a few years ago, I struggled to find an explanation. I tried to find an answer to a question that had no answer. And in that struggle... which I think we all go through to one degree or another when someone we know or love takes their own life... we start to question ourselves. Was it me? Was it what I said that time... Was it because I didn't spend enough time with him/her? Could I have made a difference? We will never fully know those answers, so the question is moot.

Or maybe that's just how I cope...

In his own words, when discussing tattoos, Boardain said... "At my age, your body is like an old beat up car. What's one more ding?"

Moron. Good thing you were just another dime a dozen lowly pill peddler, lacking what it took to become a physician. With such a lousy bedside manner, you would not have had referrals, nor retained most patients acquired.

Correct, correct, correct. You are right.

Some speculation based on knowledge can be a good thing, and i did not know much, because i liked him, but you have followed his career and have a much more intimate knowledge.

And we do go through the awful grieving process at some point speculating if it is our fault.

And it is so true the why will never be fully comprehended, because a person with so much to live for is unfathomable.

3 for 3, good job lb.

Never wanted to be an MD, imbecile. But, peddling pills, as you call it, made me very wealthy. Bet you wonder where next months rent is going to come from. After all, you have to pay for all those HIV anti-vitals......hahahahaha!!!

Man, I could care less about how much money you have. You come across as one shallow dude.

Why Barry? You don't know anything about what happens to the soul in the afterlife and you redicule one who has some faith.

Your constant shallowness is a testament to your soul. You are not perfect sir, nor am I. But, your wealth is worthless. Enjoy man...

Holy crap. I miss the times when this site was a place to crack jokes and bs about surfing. Errybody got problems - including rich folk who suppossedly live the "dream" life (note: personally spending 255+ days a year away from family for a tv show seems backwards to me but hey, to each their own). We seem to be so serious all the fucking time now. Just not fun anymore.
I hope all the SI folks battling sickness pull through.

Hey tighty whitey licker, you lost that bet on all counts. Moreover, I've probably given away more money than you have made in your lifetime. It doesn't bring happiness, and you can't take it with you.

Huh?? What have we here..another unprovoked attack??
I never said anything about money; I spoke about wealth--that comes in many forms (family, health, happiness, finances, etc). Secondly, my response to MErx's unprovoked attack is to his continuous attacks on my former occupation (which he has wrong). He has not posted his occupation, therefore, I assume his attack derives from envy, so, as I love to do, I rub sand in his envious wounds. All for fun, man.

As for soul and afterlife--that train of thinking is atavistically idiotic. There is no heaven and there is no hell. Get over it. Once you are dead, you are nothing more than food for worms. Now, if you all want to waste your time there, meh, go ahead.....but if you spout it up here - I will point out my counterpoints. Your religion has caused way too much sadness and destruction over the centuries, and yet, you do not learn. I will try to learn you......
