Personally I hope they leave the beaches the way they are, we have some decent sandbars now. But since the main concern is where are the tourists going to lay/sit on the beach at high tide, I'm sure they will be dredging away our sandbars in favor of the tourists comfort.
I think the main concern is to protect local businesses and homes from coastal flooding.... I assume you weren't down here when that huge noreaster rolled threw in Nov. Imagine if that happened right now, it would be 10 times worse.
Boo. I understand their concern though. Yea those 10ft dune cliffs were some serious damage. I used to be a lifeguard and i can just remember the summer after they dredged last time, the amount of neck and back injuries skyrocketed. Even with beach safety seminars, the shore break is nuts. And everone likes to boogie head first over the falls onto the sand. When are they starting?
Well... As of now i haven't seen any dredging more of tractors pushing sand around and clearing beach assesses for the up coming season. I figured if they were going to dredge it would of already started but i could be wrong i guess well just find out. And yes we do have some pretty nice sandbars right by my house there is a really shallow one at low perfect little lefts and rights so hopefully it stays that way! But you have to also remember we only have a few more months of freedom before its surf zones and kooks in the line up so live it up while you can! Also ill be sure to add the daily surf zones on the report so theirs no confusion!

Yea from what iv read it should be starting up soon i couldn't find exact dates just spring. I'll give the town a call tomorrow and see if i can get some info on dates the locations should be 139th to 146th uptown also large loads of sand, presumably to be taken from the downtown and midtown streets (near the Boardwalk and 60th Street), will be moved to compensate for the loss of sand on the stretch of beach known as “condo row”, amongst several other streets such as 33rd Street and between 70th-80th streets. Thats just from a news article so ill see what info i can get out of them tomorrow. I dont think they will mess my spot up but i guess well see...
that part of the restoration is already underway, has been for a long time.... the new phase about to begin is what takes place every four years and thats the pumping of sand from way out, thats what ruins our sandbars, the truckloads only affect the dunes.
Yea i know that but i just don't know how much of the beach will be done and exactly where, there are a lot of spots that need to be fixed before hurricane season starts up, Some parts would be screwed with a combo of high tide + storm surge & good size waves. Well see what they do, The spots will fix them self over time like everything else it sucks but its gota be done at some point.
No i was out in it when it cleaned up. I dont own property in OC so I dont care what happens to the tourist traps. I like the sandbars. Maybe if they dont fix the beach the shoobies wont come down and there wont be any surf restrictions. Wishful thinking I know. I also hope the water stays cold all summer, then they wont be able to stay in the water for more than fifteen minutes without going into cardiac arrest. Some on here may be too young to remember, but the huge high sand beach was non existent in the eighties. Down on 5th street the boardwalk was 10 feet over the beach. There were stairs going down to the beach. Man has tried to engineer an artificially high sand level, and facsimile sand dunes. Mother nature comes along and says... hey this is not right let me fix it. Also remember that about every five blocks there were exposed stone jetties. They are now being exposed again, the ocean is trying to bring the OC beachfront back to its natural condition. They can pump sand in for the next ten years, and it wont make any difference. A huge hurricane or a series of Nor Easters will erase mans feeble attempts to change his environment. Point already proven. Not only will the replenishment be a waste of money and time, but it will bring multiple neck and back injuries when unchecked ground swell waves crash without mercy on the naive tourists on the beach.
So what would have happened to OC if they had never done replenishing? Would the boardwalk still be there, or would everything have already collapsed? And I guess the general concensis is that Sand Pumping kills every break??? And the years when the sand shallows out some, and its lower, it allows the waves to break out in deeper water? Is that the general idea? And that the pumping is the only thing that has allowed OC to maintain its stability on land? Otherwise it would have just washed out and became one with Assawoman bay?
cap2nd you do realize Ocean City is a tourist town and with out tourism the economy would fail and so would lives of a lot of people. But thats right you don't care about that or the "tourist traps" you just want to shred when its waist to chest and glassy right?
We've discovered that alot of the sand from OC winds up at Assateague and Chincoteague. The hook keeps getting bigger. We also see alot of sand from the inland. different type of sand than from the ocean so we know its from the dredging and trucking in of sand at OC. Its certainly helps out sand bars.
