Not bad. . . I'm just curious as to why it took you 9 years to get the surfing footage cut and posted. Clearly you've got skills when it comes to the kiteboarding footage and web interface, especially being able to keep the POV stable in spite of the spinning kite canopy, and I must say that kite boarding has done much to improve the board control of the riders over those 9 years. Launching your surfboard at the end of a ride is not so cool, but the kite boarders exhibit superior control The most distracting part of the Paddle Out clip is the lack of a steady camera, but that was then, and this is now. Editing platform Macs and FCP rock. Keep 'em coming. Which version are you using? Are the kite spirals being controlled with Motion, or via manual control? I've maxed out at Studio 5.0 since I retired three years ago and effectively lost the education discount. What would have been a $1200 purchase was only about $450. Well worth even the top price, and a steal at the education price. What's your current camera of choice? Right after I bought my Canon GL 2, HD hit the consumer market, so my equipment was dated before I even got started.

I too could not afford all the latest software, just kinda picked stuff up here and there. I have AE 6.0 , its about 5 or 6 years old. I bought my GL2 about two years ago, and just missed the DSLR price drop too. The GL2 is a great camera and I'm havin a blast learning about videography with it, but it sure would be nice to get one of those Canon D7s, eh!.....someday. The kite stabilization was done with After Effects and FCP 6.0. I played around with different workflows, but in the end, I did all of the stabilizing and rotation in AE. The cam is a Vado HD, with a custom grip made by Jim Cancil out of Salisbury. He makes all kinds of cool stuff. It just damn fun playing around and learning about filming/editing. What I need to do is start filming sports I dont do, I can never get good footage when theres great waves or wind because I'm in the water. The kite cam thing is cool though, I'll be getting some great local footage this year with that. A few of us have been kiting azzt on those nukin noreasters that blow for days. It gets really smooth and big on the outside, but filming from the beach just doesnt work because the waves are so far out and so big sometimes the kite is below the wave peaks yet alone seeing the rider.
Cool I feel your frustrations about wanting to do something, but being torn in another direction at the same time. I taught video production at the local high school for about 20 years and at first built a VHS studio from scratch, and then in 2001 I transitioned to a full Mac Lab using iMovie for beginners, and FCP for those who showed talent and interest. Most weren't into sports videography, but yes, I've endured my share of skateboarding video attempts. They totaled a few camcorders along the way as well. But they learned. A few have gone on to make video production a career, and it was fun watching them grow in their skills in both videography, scripting, and post production. Others went into sound engineering. It's always fun to see what they're up to, like when one student who is now an executive producer/writer on the CBS show Criminal Minds. She's really made a name for herself in the industry, and she deserves every accolade. Another is producing freelance programming like http://random1.com/ which aired on A&E television. He also produced Jockey's http://animal.discovery.com/videos/jockeys-girl-riders.htmlfor Animal Planet Channel. And his latest is a documentary he directed/ shot and edited last year on Robert Knight, famous Rock and Roll photographer called Rock Prophesies http://www.rockprophecies.com/. Along the way, he got to meet and interview Carlos Santana, Slash, Jeff Beck, The Sick Puppies, and several classic rock icons. Tough job, but somebody's got to do it. I wish I had 1/10th the talent and life experiences that these kids have, but it's been a real hoot seeing them succeed at something they love to do and have them tell me about their latest project. As I said before, I can clearly see your growth as a videographer from the 2001 sufing footage to what you're doing now, and it's all good. The short version- "keep up the good work; you've made the medium your own and that's half the battle." As Delaware surf legend Bill Wise used to say, "All good." One last note: Tripods are worth their weight in GOLD! That should be your next investment. . . and then use it.
That is cool as hell that you've been down that road! Must be nice and rewarding to have the gift of being a great teacher! I have so many ideas for diff projects, like short "how to's", and "tip of the week", maybe some quick comedy clips, but I think I need a lesson in scripting . Like all this stuff, I just use the web for learning, creative cow, all the forums and help menus. Can you reccomend a good source for learning how to take an idea and turn it into a plan as far scrips and scenes? Tripods, I do have one use it when ever possible, should use it more though!!
