Just curious, I've never surfed OCMD before ... are the designated surf zones on the weekends the same zoo that I find in VA Beach down at 1st street? If so, I'm guessing Assateague State Park is a much better spot to go to with more space?

I was at Assateague a few weeks ago. The waves were 3-5 but the sandbar or whatever completely blew. I'm from VB and and am connoisseur of windswell and was appalled that so much size could have such terrible form and power. Absolutely no walls! Assateague is a beautiful place with no crowds but the surf (at least that day) is several notches below VB, which I did not think was possible. I will not be returning unless it's for a relaxing beach day with ladies and beer.

Rather make the drive to VB.

In OCMD, get on it early - you can surf anywhere before 10am. Then get back on it at 5:30 after the lifeguards leave. The two dedicated surf blocks can get real crowded if there is solid swell. Assateague is beautiful and uncrowded - typically you want to ride something with more length/volume there.

Might as well let a fellow connoisseur (did I get that?) on a little secret- sand bars on the island are programmed to self destruct when too many DC plates pull up onto the parking lot. This is doubled if there are all BMW's rolling in.
I say VB is a perfect spot (since Lower's is on the other side of the country).

Assateague is fickle but can rock at any moment and the right angle! Its wild compared to the controled environment at VB. I love both. Forget OC

I agree, VB really is the best place to go if you have dc plates.

LOL, I love reading these threads ... thanks everyone for the tips though, it definitely helps. I have to say, the main thing so far that has deterred me from OCMD is the $20 toll across the CBBT ... it's often a lot easier to just head south to Hatteras for the same drive-time. That being said, my mind still ponders what's up north, especially when the swell forecast seems a bit better.

I definitely feel better informed :)
