today is the last day of summer vacation for my daughter. tomorrow she starts middle school. so anyway... when i got to work this morning i clicked on SI, read zippys post and it got me thinking. i left work and went picked my daughter up and took her surfing. we didnt catch a single wave. man it was flat. i didnt care and neither did she. we just laughed and enjoy being in the water. after i took her for slice of pizza. just me and her. thanks zippy
Yeah, he is looking into that kind of stuff. I say "coding software" because I'm too stupid to understand all that IT stuff. I understand CAT 6/Fiber etc line installations.

And to the people saying a BA or BS isn't worth it....he will have a B(e)E, depending on what field he sticks with. 1000000% worth it 10000000% of the time to get an engineering degree. I may be biased....
Thanks everyone, this is actually helping me. I have to say when I was that age I wanted desperately to get away from my home but I think this is different. I was a bit neglected as a kid, had a father that berated me continually and was not prepped for life after high school. In some ways he has seperated himself from us little by little over the years and is pretty darn independent. He has worked all summer since he was 14 other than this summer where I gifted him a job with my business where I paid him $100 an hour. Not very realistic life lesson right there but it was my excuse to have him with me as much as possible before he left. We just surfed today for the last time before he goes. The waves were weak, the wind went north but it was nice to spend a little more time together. It's funny, we were still arguing in the water like it was any other day, I found that reassuring for some reason.
Presently you are the "stupidest" person he knows. After college is complete, you will be the "smartest" guys he knows......
I agree with that. Thankfully we were able to save 4 years worth of funds for him to go and come out debt free. That was a lot of things put off, a cheap $1400 boat instead of a nice one. Missed vacations, other than El Salvador with Mitchell and skegleg I handnt taken a vacation for 10 years and sent my son and wife off without me. We put birthday and Christmas money into the college account and a portion of every other cash influx we got. So hopefully he will come out with a degree in engineering and will start in the upper 60s and go up from there. His school is also one of the top 4 schools in the country for recruiting new engineering graduates, that can't hurt.
If he were any other kid I would totally agree. He knows it ends if he screws up and I'm not paying for straight c's. If that happens it's loan time. I doubt it will go that way. I had not helped with homework, checked on what he was doing in school from the time he was 12. He was just that diligent. From first grade until graduation he had all A's with only one B. If you can believe this, it was in wood shop in 9th grade and the teacher gave everyone a B because he said there is no such thing as an A in wood shop. Can you believe that?

I feel ya Zippy, I dropped my daughter off for college yesterday, I now understand depression. I went up to her room last night and browsed around, and wept like a baby. It is a hard and wonderful thing to see your child go off into the world with all the adventure before them, but it is going to be a hard adjustment for Dad, that's for sure. Feeling a bit better today, but man this is tough.
I read an article that said not to contact the child and let them choose to contact you. That makes no sense to me, I text him funny memes and pictures of our pets now when he is out with friends for days at a time why is this any different. He's my son, but also a buddy. Im texting him, lol.
Yup, I went through that years ago. But fret not--you both will get through it. She is now married, is a prof at an Ivy, and is a mom to her own daughter! Life is great a Cuda mansion presently--hope it stays that way. For all of us. And you too.
Thanks Barry, that's good to hear. I cut his hair last night and said "you need to come home in a month for a hair cut" I have given him every hair cut he has ever had.
As a relatively recent college grad (4 years ago) I can attest to this. You won't always get an answer but you'll get a call back eventually.
