I'll jump in... Can someone talk about boards like the Lost Rocket? I've been seeing that shape around a lot. I had been looking to get a small wave alternative to my fish, and ended up going on impulse and buying a used one made by Brian Wynn today. What sort of waves are they best for and how do you determine the right size?
The rocket should be great for you if you're usually riding a fish. It's made for smaller, mushier waves, and can generate A LOT of speed. It's meant to be ridden pretty small considering the first one was shaped for Shane Beschen’s son, and Shane ended being the one loving it.
i have a 5'6 channel islands pod great condition if any one wants to trade for a similar fish/groveler type board? the pod just isnt my thing
I'm also looking for something like that but i think 5'6" is a little small for me. If anyone has a board like the Lost RNF or the Rocket I'd be interested
I have a Tommy Moore "tweaker" which is similar to a Rocket. Tommy is a ghost shaper for ..lost, so I know this board is similar to a rockets bottom contours from a guy that shapes Rockets all the time. Tommy was previously with WRV here on th east coast and also has his own line of boards. HOneslty the Rocket is not a great grovel board. The board goes best in like stomach hgh to head high waves best. It gets into waves easily with a wide nose and some volume under your chest but its not a great grovel board due to the tail rocker. I am a front footed surfer though so my board has helped me with surfing more nuetral . Sizing is relative to alot of things but what has helped me the most is knowing the amount of voume you typically like as far as floating you well and not being too bouyant. I am 5'-8" 155- 160lbs in pretty good shape for a 36 year desk jockey and can handle myself in the line up. I ride boards in the 27 cl range. I have a 5'5-5" round nose fish taht is about 27.3 and my tweaker is 5-9 and its about 27.6. I could ride a regular shortboard in the 26cl range due to its longer rail line and what not. I havent been on a regular high performance shortbaord in a long time though i typically like boards 5-10 and under with lots of voume under the chest. I hope you love your Bryan Wynn, it might have a Rockets outline but the bottom controus and rocker could be totally different so its sort of hard to compare. Ride the thing and see if ya love it. If the board works great and the volume is just right then ya got yourself a winner. Dont give up on it either if you take it out on a thigh high day and don't love it, try it in decent surf and it might be magic.
Tommy Moore Tweaker & RNF Tommy Moore Shapes Tommy is a ghost shaper for ...lost and was with WRV for alot of years and has a great line boards under his label Tommy Moore Shapes Tweaker- 5'-9" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/4" (blue and black stripe) Stubby shortboard type stick. The outline looks like a sub scorcher outline, wider nose and a wide tail block (w/a diamond tail). THe board has low entry rocker in the nose and a lot of tail rocker right at the fins. The board has a deep single concave running throughout the board. This board works great in waves with some push stomach high and up. The tail rocker makes the board want to be surfed off the back foot more. I think the board works best in waves that are a bit stepper faced, the tail rocker allows you to turn quickly and get the board a bit more vertical in critical sections. I love the board, although i hated it at first. I have ridden boards with Tommy's single to double concave with a good bit of Vee off the tail for years (which love to be driven onff the front foot and fly on flatter faced surf) and beacuse of that I originally hated the board. One day it was like waist high and stepp little faces and i tried drving off my back foot and the board went insane. Great stubby board for faster waist high up to head high. I ride this board with FCS k.2's up front and a mini trailing fin in chest high and under, head high or bigger run the full thruster set of k.2 performance core fins ROUnd NOse FIsh - 5'-5" x 19 1/4" x 2- 3/8 (green and black stripe) Anyone thats ever rode an orginal 1995 style (not the newer winged version) ...lost RNF will tell you its one of the best baords they have ever had. Well Tommy's fish are that, one of the funnest performace boards you have ever ridden. Thing works in knee high to head high. Single to double conave with a bit of vee thru the tail. Low entry rocker and pretty much flat tail rocker and the board rips! I run this with k.2 s up front and a mini trialing fin or in smaller mushier waves i ride my Al merrick fins up front with a trailer in the back. Slop Rod5'-6'' x 21 1/4" x 2 3/8" EPS/Epoxy (quad) This is my groveler. Its my outline design on Tommy's round fish rockers and bottom contours. This board is simlar to a ...lost planks nose, with a Roberts Winged wihite diamond tail. I got this to be my knee high slop board, sort of a longboard alternative for me. Also using this as a learning board for my daughters, should be pretty stable being as wide as it is, but still pretty easy to manuvear when paddling for my kids. For me i hope it rips in shin high glass. Board is set to be here soon, been a long itme getting this board together. That's a lot of good info bushwood. The Wynn I got isn't made to the stock dimensions of a lost. For being a 5'7, it's fairly wide at 19.5 and thick at 2.38. At 5'7, 145 that may be a little more volume than I need, but I'd rather err with too much than too little. I can't really compare how it's rocker and concave relate to the lost, but I don't mind having a bit of tail rocker, even on smaller days.... My main complaint on my fish, is that when it's thigh high, but steep and hollow, it's sort of hard to set a rail and control my speed. That could be partly because I got it a little bigger so it could grovel well and catch anything, but it could also be because my skill set leaves a lot to be desired). It's 5'10x20.5x2.5 and has a thumbtail and even a little bit of tail rocker, so not a traditional design.
Like i said i hope the the board works great for ya. What size fins are you running in your fish, that big of a board should have some large side fins to help with hold and drive. I hope that Winn works for ya 19.5 with a fuller nose on a 5'-7 isnt super wide. I think it will serve you much better for trying to drive off rail and get more bite, because your fish is super bouyant for your size. A great thing is though if Winn is your somewhat local shaper once you ride this board for awhile realize what ya want the board to do, your likes and dislikes Winn can dial your next board in. Its so important to be able to communicate with your shaper, show him what you are currently riding, what you like in your boards, what ya dont like about them. Each board gets better, and before you know it yoyou will be getting great boards all the time.

Has anyone here had any experience with Brian Wynn's boards? I'm looking to get a few boards shaped but there isn't a lot of info on his site. Where does he shape, and will he meet with me? And what are his prices like (im looking to get a groveler, and probably a more high performance shortboard)

i have two Brian Wynn shapes. Ones a round pin step up and the other is an everyday sb. I like them both. he is easy to work with, affordable, local, reasonable turn around, pretty much everything you want . give him a call. leave a message he will actually get back to you, unlike some shapers. definitely recommend him
i've been looking to get a more high performance rounded pin tail step-upish board for heavier days, and a fish-shortboard hybrid groveler. i'm not completely sure so i don't want to get too specific, but basically something for decent, bigger surf, as well as something for mushy summer days
