I know, its been on here a million times, but here is the most recent installment of offshore drilling in the local media today. Sounds like everyone who is anyone in politics down here has "changed their opinion" and seems to be all about offshore drilling in South Carolina waters, after decades of opposition. Now they are pushing the Obama administration to make it happen... What a bunch BS. "It's better for the US. It great for Merica..... " Well, 98% of the country won't have to deal with the repercussions when sh** hits the fan, we will. And $18 BILLION of our annual economy relies on the beaches and the Atlantic.... 1 in 10 jobs in the state is tourism related to coastal hospitality... so we are going to risk hundreds of thousands of jobs, for a potential 11,000 jobs that might come in 20 years? Get the fu** outta here. With the natural gas boom inland, stay the fu** out of the ocean. "we are fighting for an energy independent USA"... HA! With fossil fuel. What a bunch of as$ clowns. http://www.islandpacket.com/2014/04/22/3072912/in-south-carolina-leaders-reconsider.html
Amen!!!! i think the idea of wind generators out in the ocean is so much better than oil drilling and clean. We are weaning ourselves off oil. keep the pressure on!
Such a bunch of BS. Watched the Gasland documentary last night and it was seriously infuriating(sic).
Gas land 2 had a part about the Guff spill. The maker of the film wanted to fly over and photograph the area, but the FAA shut down the airspace over the area. He waited until Christmas day and called up to get permission. A flunky was the only one working and gave him the OK to fly. shows you 2 things. Oil companies own the US, and holidays are the best time to get past bureaucratic bull schiesse. then there's this, http://www.latimes.com/nation/natio...hquakes-20140411,0,570007.story#axzz2zjh4qway
there's been talk of the same kind up here. there are too many untapped renewable options to risk ****ing around & causing a disaster like the deepwater horizon mess.
It's amazing that we put so much energy and money into trying to make fossil fuel industries profitable, but yet we have these amazing natural producers like the sun, wind, and water that are right in front of our faces. As far as I know I haven't heard of a solar panel killing anyone or poisoning the air or water. I guess these types of sources are too accessible and the wealth would be too spread out that these companies aren't interested in it.
SC is for sale, and our hardcore conservative leaders will tell you this will solve all the state's financial problems. That is, until there is an accident. Then our waterways and beaches will be trashed, while the politicians roll in the money.
drill baby drill. stop buying oil from terrorist nations who take our money and use it to try and kill us.
Why are your panties all in a twist? I can see a string of offshore oil platforms from my back yard. Old timers talk about the big day when the waves were breaking against the bottom of the wells. It's not such a big deal. I don't think we've ever had a major spill here. The occasional tar ball is annoying, but the sky's not falling. The oil rigs certainly don't interfere with surfing or the marine life around here. The whales pay them no mind, and I saw a superpod of dolphins just the other day. In principle, I agree we should wait to extract the oil until prices per barrel are a LOT higher, and then just use it for plastics and equipment rather than burn it for transportation. Still, it's not such a big deal. We're all screwed by AGW whether we burn oil, gas, or coal. Make sure your oceanfront property is at least 10 meters above the mean high tide line.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130501145118.htm It's all great until there actually is an accident, which happens enough as it is. All we need is more rigs to increase the chances of accidents. No thanks, not on my coast. Also, the logic that we are screwed anyway because of climate change is not an excuse to give up even trying to protect the environment. Humans need to learn how to exist on this planet without consuming so much energy. That would help society way more than drilling for more resources.
Where do you live, because the picture you just painted does not really sound that appealing. If you have a skyline of oil rigs along your ocean's horizon, that is EXACTLY what I want to avoid. If there were visible oil rigs off shore from the beaches here, I would have kindly moved my way down the coast to somewhere else. All beach vanity aside, it sucks that it's too late for where you live. They haven't been doing that along this coastline, so I will do anything and everything in my power to support anything that will stop it. Like I said, 11,000 jobs in 30 freaking years is not worth jeapordizing the hundreds of thousands of coastal hospitality jobs, the wildlife and the animals. I mean, that is why people come here. We have such an incredible mix of wildlife, coastline, shellfish, fish, birds. I mean, it's an amazing place. One "accident" would ruin that for my daughter's childhood.... NOT WORTH IT.
And I will even go so far as to play a little devil's advocate. I understand why we still NEED oil. Our economy is so fragile right now that people are still lucky to be working. Most are struggling to keep up with payments on the fossil fuel burning machines. Cars. Farm Equip. Freight and Trucking. Airlines. I mean, EVERYTHING we do requires it... So it would be silly to think that all of the sudden we are going to ween the nation off of it in 10 years. I mean, its impossible. You can't force people who have $50-$60k in combined fossil fuel vehicles to just scrap them and shell out money for vehicles that burn a different fuel. I mean, it would take 50 years to completely remove fossil fuels from our society as a necessity. I mean, I am only arguing the domestic side of things. At least in large business you can provide tax incentives and ways to streamline change in business and transit. But that would take 25 years to do... But you have to start somewhere. We have to put our foot down somewhere. I don't care how crooked these politicians are, and they see the $$ to bring into our economy, to put on their resume and make their was up to Washington. I am just saying, I understand our need for oil, but when you come knocking on my door in my community asking if you can put an oil rig off my coastline, the door will slam in your face really quickly... Think Globally, act locally, isn't that the old saying for so many surfers? Well, this is local to me now. This isn't a what if. Someone is trying to infiltrate our ocean. The ocean can't speak for itself. Neither can our wildlife. Mother Nature will rear her ugly head when she gets gravitated enough. Ask BP and Exxon all about it. I am not even a tree hugger, but this is bullsh**.
I hate to get all political and shiz but these things are not about generating jobs and doing good for the people of South Carolina. It's all about $$$ for politicians and taking care of the sources of those $$$. If Nikki Haley and crew were truly concerned about boosting jobs and creating real economic impact in your state, all they would have to do is say yes to Medicaid expansion under the ACA (aka Obamacare): http://www.scha.org/files/documents/me_qanda_13_0.pdf Let's see, 11k jobs over 30 years versus 44k jobs over 6 years. It's not very difficult to do the math. Regardless of how one may feel about the whole Obamacare thing, not accepting these federal funds is just stupid. The states that are not going along with it are paying out in taxes and getting no benefit. Typical red state cutting your nose off to spite your face kind of stuff. We've got the same nonsense down here. Hopefully, Mr. Scott's days at the helm should be ending this November. BTW, I am opposed to offshore oil drilling for all the same reasons others have posted in this thread. Florida's economy is even more closely linked to the ecological well being of our coasts. Just the thought of it makes me cringe. I hope I haven't just derailed another thread...
To get back on topic. Well put, sir. We do have to start somewhere. Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that things will work out is not a viable option IMO. Expanded drilling off our coasts will provide relatively little to the total amount of fossil fuels we will eventually pump out of the earth. The only thing it does is make it easier for big wealthy oil companies to make more profit. There is a small upside and a huge potential downside to the local communities. When the accidents happen, and they do happen, it is usually the taxpayers that foot most of the cleanup bill. Our coasts, wetlands and wildlife end up paying the ultimate price.
No derailment. I completely agree. I couldn't believe that they axed medicaid. I mean, quite a few of my restaurant employees all relied on that to survive. Its just more bureaucracy. They were so apposed to the Obama administration, they used it as an excuse to put a strangle hold on their own citizens and pass the buck to Obama saying that it's their fault that they had to make the cuts... I mean, I don't know enough about it to dispute that claim, but that is certainly the way they pitch it... When I moved here in 2012, the Island Packet (The newspaper of this county basically. Monopoly) walked into my restaurant. We have a 300 foot pier that is visible to every person who enters the island. The Island Packet told me that it would be a "nice gesture" for me to allow them to hang a 200 foot long Mitt Money Banner on our pier until the election was over. They said, its 70%+ GOP support down here, it will really help your numbers... I said, sure guys... Let me Alienate 30% of my local market and piss off every one of the MILLIONS of democrats that enters the island and decides to never step foot in my establishment... I said, regardless of my political views, I will not hang that sh** no matter what. It was crazy... They kept pushing me on a daily basis. Good people, but I don't mix business with politics... never good.
