Here's a pic. IMG_6311.jpg You can see an oil platform 1/4 of the way over from the left side. They're more visible at night when they light up like Xmas trees on the water. They're seriously no big deal.

On a side note, I saw 4 gray whales today and a whole mess of dolphins. The whales were cruising about 20 yards off the lineup. Crazy!

I agree that "we're all screwed" isn't a good argument for increased consumption, but that's not what I'm saying. I agree we should conserve energy and oil. I'd rather we got all our power from wind, hydro, solar, or nuclear. However, that is not the world we live in. My car runs on gas because I'm too cheap to buy a plug-in, which would just run on power produced by fossil fuels, anyway.

My point is; don't get your knickers in a twist over oil rigs. Get them twisted about your jerk cousin who drives around all by himself in his giant SUV. Or how you left the lights burning when you could've turned them off. NIMBY isn't a solution, it's just pushing the problem off on somebody else, temporarily. Act locally to reduce your own consumption, not to block drilling in your back yard. You know they're going to pull that oil out someday. The best thing you can do to delay that day is to reduce your own consumption, and encourage your friends to do the same.

Every protest by NIMBYs against drilling, pipelines, etc. is just that much more energy wasted.

I feel you. Im just not about the Oil Rigs. Can't do it.

I mean, we did invade Iraq over 10 years ago to strategically place ourselves in the middle of the world's oil supply. Since we went through all this trouble, can't we at least take all the damn oil already and stop pretending....

I don't care how you slice it. If I wake up and see oil rigs off the coast, Im moving. I am not saying that the wildlife is affected all the time by it. Its the ocean. Of course the dolphins and the whales are doing what they do. But look at the previous link posted about the fish around the BP disaster.

I mean, a sewage spill in San Diego killed the whole shellfish season one year I was there. No one ate local lobsters through the whole winter... I can't even imagine the affects in the Low Country waterways if there was an oil leak.

Our bread and butter is oysters... Oysters by the billions and shrimp. You are telling me that every oyster bed in this area wouldn't be destroyed for years and years?

I just don't want to see this happen. That's all.
