Winter has its doldrums just like summer. Around here it is strong NW winds. I keep expectations (therefore disapointments) low during both. Come on springtime
the way 2012 wrapped up, with so much swell and so much energy, i felt like a flat spell such as this was almost guaranteed. cause and effect type of deal
It's different. Things are in constant flux. That being said, I don't remember Jan being a great month at all. Winter is all or nothing often and more so not. No surprise there. Let's try not to be surprised when it's pretty flat in July either. EC living, baby. It's called 'travel'.
I don't care what anybody says January is always the worst month of the year followed by July. Of course there have been years that buck that trend but all in all its sh*t.
Yeah, everyone here calling Surf5 a kook has no idea what they are talking about. January is hands down the worst month every year. Canadian highs dip into the middle to eastern half of the US and set up and it blows from the NW at 30mph bar the occasional wobble in the jet stream. Even July has bermuda high swells. Yeah it sucks, but it will get better, February / March leave good chances for those big North Atlantic lows to stall and drift SW.
Skeglegs I swear I have been dreaming of El Salvador for the last month. I have watched every video on Vimeo and youtube about the east. There is a video out there that shows all the ladies from the kitchen, the young guy that was there during the day keeping the grounds and our boat driver. What was his name, Eduardo? Anyhow I miss that place especially now.
This is shaping up to be a pretty funny thread. I guess we're all idiots. Go here and click "season." http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA/North_East/New_Jersey/index.html
if by terrible you mean colder than a witches t*tty, then yes it is always terrible. There's a rideable wave roughly 3 days a week. It's July's colder brother basically. Might not got many solid swells the whole month but there's a wave most of the time. With that being said, this january hasn't been so great. I'm just ready shed the rubber.
I've come to believe that we all see what we want to see. You can show me all the websites in the world that name January as a historically decent month for surf and I would still say it sucks. There have been days here and there but most have been fickle with changeable winds, the wrong tides when the winds are good or its just too brutal to waste a day for knee high close outs. At least for me there have been more crappy January's in my life than memorable ones. Most here would admit that July is pretty worthless but where I live it is warm, the beach is south facing and any local southeast blow of 10 mph or more will stir up a little wave. If you have a low incoming tide the next morning and no wind it can be really fun. So for me even though July is still fairly lame it seems to be better than most experience based on the comments I read on here during the summer. I'm glad for the guys who want to argue that January is a good month but that's not my perception.
Well... it's a long way from NC to NJ. I'm sure that has something to do with it... but I don't know. I just think to say, "January is always terrible," and, "people should know this who've been surfing for any period of time," is silly, because it's just not accurate, and that's what I was trying to get across. And Zippy... you're right. It has a LOT to do with perspective. I think people DO see what they want to see, and remember what they want to remember. A few epic January swells, and that's what people, like me, may tend to remember. This is my 36th consecutive winter surfing in New Jersey, so I have a lot of memories to look back on. It's the East Coast. We have flat spells. We all suffer through them. And while there have been a couple days this month where there's been small, fun surf, the majority of the month's been pretty f'n flat. Like... pool table flat... and we've yet to see an overhead day. Yet...
