I grabbed my opponents lapel with one hand, his sleeve with the other and stepped in for a take down. He squatted to lower his center of gravity and put his weight on my shin. Following that were two very loud pops and the fight was over.

So how 'bout them head high waves?

A head high wave is a good wave... I'll take 23 of 'em, for sure.

Gotcha, thought he put a knee bar on you and you refused to tap or something, sorry to hear that. Hope you didn't give up BJJ all together, but understandable if you did. It sounds like a freak accident.

Always respected the tap, no way would I let my ego come before my joints. But similar to clintopher, my knee was just in the wrong place at the wrong time w/ the wrong weight/pressure on it...broke a cpl fingers that just got caught up in gi sleeves...just instances of sh*t happening. But the skin stuff is what really creeped me out, got ringworm for a while, then warts on my hands that took forever to go away.

OK good, never understood why anybody would let their ego get in the way their snapped limbs, i.e. Big Nog / Tim Sylvia, thanks to Frank Mir, dude rips limbs off like it's his job, oh wait, it kinda is HAHA

Yeah man I had a good group of guys I was training with, no egos, but every now and again accidents happen.

Every account I've read of big wave surfers indicates to me that they are still really scared when they get into those conditions, i.e., it's not likely you can ever get accustomed to putting yourself in that much danger. The high they get is from managing to escape. I surf for relaxation, not to see how close to the edge I can put myself, so I would have no interest in a 23 footer, even if it was physically possible for me. I'd never go skydiving either-- just have no interest in intentionally scaring myself.

Try tai chi chaun. I got into a rollover a few years ago and it really helped me rehab my shoulder/ribs. If done properly it will increase vitality to your aching knees and other joints. Also has great martial arts applications. BTW, for the record, my triple overhead plus days are a great memory, and all that, but at this point give me a clean 3 hour session in head high waves with my bros any day. Then a fattie, a cold one and a nap.

Na man, Jesus never tapped. It's a tough line to tread between living to fight another day and fighting through a submission. All depends on what they got you in and if it's gonna break part of your body. Calf cutters, scissor locks or similar, it's laughable when guys tap on those because its not going to kill you, break a limb, or choke you unconscious. It's simply pain that you can label in your mind as a physical sensation that is fleeting and will be gone soon. It's when guys don't train every move that they end up in something for the first time during a fight or a comp and their body says "get me out of this schitt!! I've never felt this pain before and don't want to die!! Tap now and save us!!!" I use lesser-known hip subluxations out of full mount that get guys tapping like butterflies. That and cranking their neck on any guillotine. The spine is like Pavlov's bell for a victim to tap.

Other subs, different story. While hypoxia is certainly not good for the brain, I'd be willing to be choked out cold before tapping. Usually, if you're defending like you should, they don't have perfect pressure on your carotid or trachea and you can weather the storm until they get gassed from their grip.

I got heel hooked in a fight once where I had a great takedown and was going from side control to full mount and getting ready to rain down on the bastard when my post up leg was a bit too far forward and he cuffed it and cranked real fast. Dude was a brown belt jits so wasn't taking him long to crank on it. I felt a sensation comparable to a thin stream of boiling water running down the side of my knee and knew enough then to somersault out of it which worked. Ended up DQ'd later in the fight from a head strike right after he put his hand (third point/limb) to the ground, even though I was up points for a decision. Knee felt fine til 7 hours later when adrenaline wore off and I got up off the couch to get water and fell on my face. Partially torn MCL. Hurts like hell for 5-9 months and although doesn't require surgery it hurts a lot more than a full tear.

Anyway, like the bumper sticker says, Jesus never tapped. Be one with the pain and it too shall pass. Like in life, nothing worse than tapping out in the face of challenge when you could've pushed through it.

Back to 23 foot elevation and the litany of things we love to obsess about every day that NEVER will get old.

Solid post, but you gotta know when to tap, Big Nog should have, but his pride wouldn't let him, because he thought he is the best BJJ practitioner to ever live, which is not the case, he's up there, but Frank took that arm home with him. He had plenty of time to do so, he just ignored his body's advice to give up and paid the consequences. Jesus didn't tap because he couldn't freakin move being nailed to a cross and all, no verbal submissions in those days either, and no refs like Kim Winslow to let him die in the cage like she likes to let fighters do, so he really had no choice.

Dude heel hooks are notoriously sketchy it'd be pretty dumb to risk your entire leg to not tap.
