super sad... i've got grandkids aging from "in utero" to 6 years old. I watch them like a hawk in the surf. I've pulled multiple kids out of shitty situations. Some time the parents are grateful, sometimes the parents don't even know what almost happened. One of the worst parents was a surfer!!!
Very sad indeed...literally 100s of yards from a spot I surf on the regs. So sorry for that family. Such a young kid... Hug the ones you love...you never know RIP little dude!
The ocean that day was pretty raw. There is so much power down there compared to anywhere else on the east coast. The shore break can easily take you off your feet.
I have lost a son. Life will never be the same for that mother. If she didnt have a connection with God before, she will now have a high speed personal connection. Poor little guy.
terrible. had something similar happen up here the other day. can't imagine the pain https://bangordailynews.com/2018/04...ndroscoggin-river-for-missing-5-year-old-boy/
Condolences to that boys family. I saw some infant children down by the water by themselves the other day when I got in the water and mentioned to their family they might want to watch them as the tide comes in. A couple of experienced surfers entered the water that day and ended up 6 blocks north in about 3 minutes of watching them. I'm tearing up reading that release. That pain of losing a child will never go away, I know from experience. Prayers for the family and prayers to those here who have suffered loss.
This story has been on our local news. The boy's family was from Manchester NH, and was down in NC for Spring break. Adorable kid, so damn sad.
I'm probably going to get some backlash here. So please correct me if I'm wrong. And regardless, this is very sad. But I'm questioning that mother's intelligence. Whoever posted that video of the search helicopter.... you can see all that water moving. Sure as surfers we are in tune with the ocean and see things others don't when we look at the ocean. But the ocean also has moods. Sometimes it looks nice and pretty. Sometimes it looks mean and nasty. That ocean looked mean and nasty. I don't care how little you know about the ocean. You should be able to see that and recognize maybe walking with a young child in the shore break isn't a good idea. Hopefully i misread somthing and she isn't the idiot im thinking she is. It's a sucky situation no matter what. But would be extra sucky if what happened was the result of a mother's ignorance and lack of thinking
I hear what you're saying BassMon, but I don't think the mother is an idiot. Yes the ocean was mean and nasty, but I think most people just have no idea how much force breaking waves and currents have.
Yeah. Maybe idiot was harsh. Ignorant seems to fit. I totally get that people don't realize the force of the ocean or currents. But you can see the water and current rushing north. Even without ocean knowledge, you'd think that would raise a red flag in the mother's head. Example. Driving in the snow. People in the north know the dangers and have experience with it. But it should still be common sense if you've never driven in snow you should increase your distance and decrease your speed. Just because it was a nice sunny day don't mean there's no dangers on the beach. Maybe I'm the ignorant one, having the knowledge to no better and expecting the same knowledge to be had by others. Like i said, it's a sad story. I guess it just bothers me that from what i saw in the video.... this all should of been avoided.
If you didn't grow up around the ocean, you probably are oblivious to it's power. When I was a young grom of 15, my mom had a friend whose daughter was coming over to visit San Diego from Oklahoma. They asked me if I would show her around. So my first question was, "is she hot?". Unfortunately, she looked like Chief Wiggum's daughter. Anyways I took her to the beach one summer day and when we got back home her folks asked her what she thought about the beach. Her reply (I'll never forget this) was, "the waves knock you over". Heck, I figured everybody knew that instinctively. Her answer showed me otherwise. Probably the same case here. Add double gnarl points because it happened in the Banks, probably more responsible for dead people the last several centuries than any other beach in the lower 48. My condolences to the family.
Very sad story and my condolences and prayers for the family. The pain and loss are too much for words. I was in Sandbridge about 30 mIles north surfing that day and the surf was rough, a tricky paddle out. The current was strong, as I drifted 2 blocks in no time at all. I imagine it was not good day in kitty hawk for someone without experience to be in the water.
