ok, i don't want to jinx us residents of southern california but i would really like to know if it's safe to surf during a major earthquake i mean, it makes sense to me... i'm just curious though. has this ever been addressed?
Well, the san andreas fault, which is the threat for California earthquakes, is inland. So, I dont think this would trigger any tsunamis. But if there was an earthquake anywhere in the pacific, you are going to want to be on alert for tsunamis.
cool... so if a disaster like the SF quake 100 years ago happened, it would be ok to be in the lineup snagging waves? actually i think that quake's epicenter was offshore is there any possibility for a quake to erupt off the coast of southern california?
you ever hear that southern california is going to sink into the ocean? This is because of the san andreas fault. check out the location of the fault here: http://geology.com/san-andreas-fault/ I believe all of the california earthquakes occur here, but i'm not positive about that. That being said, I think your safe from Tsunamis due to earth quakes at the san andreas fault. However, if there was an earthquake in the South Pacific, those Tsunami waves could travel all throughout the Pacific.
