Hi, I am wondering if you can help me with a project I am doing. I'm writing about a pro surfer and have some questions about surf boards.

    My questions are:
    1. What type of surfboards do the pros ride when surfing pipeline? (Especially during contests) I don't need all the specifics. Just a typical name to call them.

IE: Could i say he is using a "semi-gun thruster" or would no one actually say that? Originally I had him JUST riding a thruster...but that could be any board with 3 fins right?

    2. Do the pros ever ride shortboards at pipe? I know Kelly does, but other than him? haha. And if so, what kind?

    3. Do the pros ever do tricks out at Pipe during contests...or are the judges mostly looking for barrel rides?

    Thanks
    Cheryl

Pipe board or Pipe boards. In a sentance: "why would you bring your pipe boards on a trip to New Jersey"
Pipe is a dreamy barrel, so judges want to see barrels and any "trick" should only be an exclamation point after a sick tube. A juicy hack or something is nice before a heavy tube and would probably add to the wave score too.

at pipe they usually ride step boards with rounded pin tails that are typically longer than a standard shortboard. some guys (like kelly and shane dorian) ride really short boards that are thicker to give them more paddle power

This is a selfish promotion of my hobbie site, but you can check out tons of 18MP pics for free up on www.surfhale.com. There are a few galleries from the latest PipeMasters in the SURF section.

    Shoots.

    Thanks :)

One more question if I may. When paddling out to Pipeline through the channel do you ever need to duck dive, or is it an easy go? I just need to know what it's like so I can describe it.

Also if anyone is interested in really helping me with my book please email me: look_bunnies@hotmail.com. I really want to make sure anything I put about surfing is relevant. I have surfed and do know a lot about the subject, but have never gone out in big waves or the north shore.

Theres really no channel there. You just paddle to the left or right of pipe.
