I can't stand him either. Nasal voice and all he talks about is old sh!t...and keeps talking bullsh!t in run-on sentences throughout the action. Every time Turpel says "we talk about...", I know a major load of uninteresting diarrhea is about to spew out of him and I can't reach the mute button fast enough.

Ross Williams is the role model for surf commentating, imo: he talks about the action when there is action. When there isn't, he talks about conditions, bathemetry, etc...I actually learn from him.

I vote we do an SI alternative commentary broadcast. We all get drunk and stoned and call the heats.

    Joe Turpel NEVER shuts up.
He's the Joe Buck of surf commentators.
Terrible voice for broadcast too, so nasal.

bro ross Williams is a fukin legend!!!ross, slater, and shane dorian were like best friends/big wave partners in the early to late 90s.u hear how they talk about the guys not wanting to paddle out through backdoor.back in the early 90s ross, dorian, and slater would have competitions like paddling out through backdoor with ur board upside down and whoever made it out first wins.also todd chesser was another big one, rest in peace.but yea u can learn a lot from Williams, hes the real deal.

and u don't see much stuff from slater on big waves, but in the early 90s he was damn near a pioneer, better than dorian lol, charging maxed out waimai while people were dying at waimai, and they weren't using floaties back in them days.they even got footage of slater at jaws towing in 80footers,no life vest, just straight watermen

Was hoping to see more from Bruce, but he probably would have benefited from bigger conditions... the real disappointment to me was how Stinkbug DeSouza barely scraped by Jack Robinson after hassling him in the lineup.

I know the head-games are part of competition, but still, copying someone's every move in the lineup... it looked sad and childish, just like his stinkbug style. Anyone but AIDS, please.

Tough heat for Dusty. I hope it's macking when it picks back up again.

Painfully obvious and I thought the same thing. It was literally mirror image movements, but with a desperate look. Ugly and low class. I could practically hear the disgust in Martin Potter's voice. What made it even stupider is Jack had priority. Who the fvck shadows the surfer with priority?...it's pointless, other than just being blatantly annoying. Poor sportsmanship and another bad ambassador for brazil, imo.

desouza needed it more than jack robinson lol.hate all u want but desouza just doing his job,if I was fighting for the world title and had some super grom like jack in his heat I would've snaked him on every wave lol.its a cut throat business..and its all about priority, doesnt matter how great of a surfer u are,if u can keep the good guys off the good waves by holding priority, same way medina beat slater in epic teahupoo

Completely agree. He was blocking his view so he wouldn't be able to see where the next set was coming from to keep him out of position. Isn't there a rule against that?

lol... This.. this is the problem with pro surfing. What happened to people actually winning based on their ability to surf as opposed to winning based on pimping the system. De Souza will never win a world title.

lol idk man I havnt checked the ratings lately but I heard hes in the running.please lord allah bukaka we do not need 2 Brazilians world titles back to back.adrianos alright tho,hes literally the only Brazilian I some what like.hes been on tour for a long time and knows how to compete.

that's the thing tho,pro surfing is a cut throat business.everyone on tour is an excellent surfer, but when the conditions suck, other guys are taking ur priority its hard to win.its really mind games out there.like for example I'm Adriano and in a heat with slater and slater has priority.il start paddling for a closeout lol having Kelly thinking its a good one and he uses his priority, falls, gets cleaned up,has to do the run around and ur out there all alone with ur pick of any waves that come through.thats how andy irons always beat Kelly.its also bs how they overscore all the Brazilians and aussies.
