Anyone catch this program on the Green Channel. It was about Paul Watson Who Capitain for the Steve Irwin and Starter of the Sea Sheppard Conservation Soceity. It show how he got started as a Conservationist and his other conservation Campains he does beside his whaling campain in the south seas. Some say that Paul Watson goes a bit oveboard with how he tries to stop the Whalers but sometimes I feel you gotta take it to the next level when needed. He wouldnt put his crew in a situaiton if he didnt feel that it was safe to do so.
Yeah that Carbon fiber speed boat got wasted. Thats the one thinng I have to say a disagree with is the people on his crew. Most dont have a whole lot of experience operating a boat in a small pond yet they are driving the Zodiacs on the open sea???? Hey I guess you he cant complain they are voluntering there time and are not getting paid for there time on the boat. They just wanna help the cause David Rastovich is a Sea Shepherd Supporter heh even has a signature fin out with the Sea Shepherd logo on them and he donates a percentage of the sale to them .
I like the way southpark shows it. If they want to kill whales so be it. You don't see the Hindus coming over to America trying to stop us from killing cows for meat. They should try voluntering for something that will actually help the greater need of the people. My .2$ and yes I love animals and sea life...
this analogy sucks b/c it makes no sense. cows, while sacred to the hindus, are bred for food by every other culture. whales & dolphins are not. cows are not known world-wide for their intelligence as whales & dolphins are. you're comparing apples & oranges here. whales & dolphins are some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, living in clearly organized social groups w/ complex hierarchies, rules, & behaviors. they have a language. they use tools. these are not behaviors routinely applied to food animals (cows, sheep, & the like). you can go on all you want about how europeans hunted certain whale species to near-extinction, but the fact of the matter is that that is in the past. conservation is the way of the (western) world now. just like japan, whaling used to be a vital part of the culture for many western nations, including the US. we have made a cultural shift away from hunting these animals & there is a big push, thanks to the actions of tillikum the killer whale, to end their overall exploitation. i may not agree 100% w/ what sea shepherd does, but i think that whaling is an archaeic practice that has no place in a world that recognizes the intelligence evident in aquatic mammals & other species in general.
this reminds me of that guy they called "Grizzly Man". I saw his documentary where he would go camping in Alaska for the whole summer and get close to bears and stuff. Dude was weird, thought he was friends with the bears and ended up getting eaten by a "bad" bear.
I sound like a di** saying this too, but I think people especially in the U.S. tend to forget that NO MATTER how you look at it, Humans are at the top of a food chain. Certain civilizations have made decisions to eat some animals, while turning other into pets, and protecting other animals so they can stick them in zoos. The answer to this is, well when sharks are in the water, they are above us in the food chain, but these whalers and the fact that I ate a shark taco 2 days ago leads me back to thinking, yes we are on top of the food chain, and if the Japanese want to use animals for oil, food or whatever, thats their business... So I thikn that is kinda what the hindu comment was saying. That we as americans get to choose the way the rest of the world works? no... asians eat chicken toes and mexicans eat beef stomach and certain aasian cultures eat dogs... Who are we to judge any of them.... If it is a fish in the water, its fair game in mSince humans developed ways to capture giant fish weighing multiple tons, that just goes to show that we are more advanced and we did move past everything on the food chain... Sh**, we would kill bears and every other animal in this country if there werent protection laws... If I lived out in Colorado with my family, and a bear rolled up on us, I would probably want to shoot the thing and eat it.,... But I guess I cant.... And im no hunter or anything... I LOVE ANIMALS too... I just think this topic is another arrogant american/western kind of thing...
Its like the USA saying, well if we want to stop global warming, we have to convince CHina, Mexic and India to shut down all their toxic, lead filled, polluting industrials buildings etc... Well USA, never gonna happen, so you might as well stop making Priuses and stuff global warming down our throats, because for thousands of years, these other cultures have developed themselves the way they saw fit, and now we want to intervien.... ohh hell no.... Its wayyyyyy too late for that. Maybe if we stopped buying cheap child labor 50 years ago or maybe if we stopped importing lead toys and sh** from mexico decades ago, I am not really sympithetic... We sh** on these people, we have used them to our benefit, but now that we have moral comlications with them, we want them to change.... American Arrogance.,.. Those other countries will never move their smoke stacks, or their child labor plants... Until they, as their own society democratically decides to do it on their own.... So, let the japanese whale, let the tawainese pay kids $.05 an hour to make Nikes, let the Chinese toy lead plants continue, because all of these coutries stay alive by these methods... Its not our business. We as individuals, we can boycot buying products we dont agree with, but we need to stay outta people business. And what people want to do in their own national waters is their own business.... They cant come to the states and tell us how to regulate our coasts... so we need to let it go
i couldn't care less just as well, but i was wondering if it had to due with endangering them. if this is the case i could see what the deal is. however, i think those guys on whale wars are useless and annoying; there are better ways to go at this
Good point about zoos Zach. In my opinion caging/captivating a wild animal is worse than killing it. You can't criticize people for eating any animals when we stick them in a cage for our entertainment. I love dogs, but if certain cultures see them as food - its their right to. I can disagree with it, but I can't tell them they're not allowed. Hindus worship the cow and we mass produce them for sustenance. To each their own!
I think the Sea Sheppard protects whales in protected waters. Anyway, nothing pisses me of more than seeing Russian/Chinese/Japanese and whoever else dragging right of our shores. They take everything that gets in their nets - size or species dosent matter. Yet sportfishing has strict size and number limits. I've been out fishing less that 100 yards from a dragger and trust me, they will run right over you if you get in their way.On the way in we were boarded and checked. And don't tell me the draggers stay within their boundries. I've seen them less that a mile off shore. Fish and game / State Police don't have the power or the balls to board them. I'm not saying there should be no controls on sport fishing but each year it gets worse. Ask the Chinese if they give a rats a## about polution, endangered species, human rights. You'll be looking down a muzzle. Yet we want to tax and penalize everying and anything that puts out a hydrocarbon here. Why do you think we don't make anything here anymore? America is loosing its backbone and balls and its only getting worse. Hopefully politicians of the future will be held accountable for their actions.
What you dont understand is that the whaling is being done in a deginated Whale Sacuary. Also the Japanese are using a loopole in the Internation whaling act to where they can kill a set # of whales made by each country for "Research" The Japanese set the number high where other countries have a low or no number at all. The Japanese are bending the rules to there advantage. Whale Meat goes for big money in Japan and the IRC gets it funding from the goverment of japan so both parties make money the IRC and Japans goverment. I and when was the last time you heard for a animal being traped and being removed from its habitat to be put in a zoo??? Most animals in Zoo today are raise and born in captivity . The number of animals that were captured in the wild to be put in zoo's is very low . Most of them animals have died due to natrual causes. Yeah the animals may be in a habitat not of there orgin but they get food and medical attention . That more than most homless people around the world get
Its different if its happening in a sanctuary, but then the international community should put pressure on them to relent. Regarding zoos, it doesn't matter to me if they were born in captivity or in the wild. All animals are still instinctively wild. There hasn't been any change in evolution to make animals content with being captive.
I consider domesticating animals for companionship the same as putting them in captivity for entertainment. The difference is that domestication is past the arguing point, where captivity can still be stopped. Look at that woman who tried to keep the chimp in her home and it ripped her friends face off. More recently, the whale that killed its trainer in Sea World. Even dolphins, who have to breathe voluntarily, will stop breathing in captivity. I would let my dog go free but "dogs" are really just domesticated wolves, so the survival instincts have been largely bred out of them.
There is no such thing as a Domesticated animal, All animals have a primal instinct. There is no differcnce between a tiger born and raise in captivity by a care taker and a dog or cat that was raised by humans aswell. We tell them when to eat , We let them go outside to take a crap and they both get medical attention as needed. My sister was severly attacked by our family dog in 1993 it was in the paper and on the news. The she was only 3 at the time she sat got out of bed to watch tv at like 6 am and she sat next to the dog while he was sleeping and startled him . End result he had to get 500+ stiches her jaw was borken in 3 peices she lost 4 teeth and had 2 skin graphs. Plus the mental trama she has to deal with now as well Sorry I just dont see the difference. A dog or cat can easily turn on its owner like that chimp did to that lady.
