I will be venturing to Peniche in December. Staying between Supertubos and Baleal. Any of you lads ever been across the pond? Just looking for some insight on the local vibe, neat places to visit, drugs to try, you know... Thanks in advance
Been up the coast but didn't surf. Try to stay in one of those old castles, et. al., that are converted to lodging/hotel. http://www.pousadasofportugal.com/ The hotel at Guincho is literally on the beach & was a fantastic place when I stayed there. http://www.fortalezadoguincho.com/Default.aspx?areaid=7#.ViY9AZOuqJ8 The town of Sintra is worth a visit. Insane drivers in Lisbon. Full surf report upon your return, senhor!
Been there surfed there. But I went down to Sagres. Surfed at the base of some nice cliffs; surf was 6-8 ft hollow tubes, just me and another local surfer. Would love to do it again. BTW, Lisbon sucks as a city, at least for my taste. The rest of Portugal is nice though.
I stayed two days in Baleal this past June. The only swell was coming from the NW so didn't even check the south side of Peniche. The nice thing about Baleal is that it's such a large beach that there's space to spread out. Both days I surfed there the wind was from the north but the dunes to the north side of the beach blocked enough of the wind that the waves stayed fairly clean. On the second day we continued north to check out Nazare. If the waves were chest high at Baleal then they were head to head and a half at Nazare. However, it's totally exposed to the north winds so definitely depends on what the wind is doing while you're there. We stopped in Lisbon and Porto. Both very pretty cities. Porto's a little more industrial but up-and-coming. They're both very hilly so be prepared to feel the burn if you're gonna walk around. Port wine is named for Porto so if you're into really sweet wine then there's that. Also don't let the border stop you from traveling north into Spain (if your itinerary isn't already set). Galicia has some great waves. We stopped in A Coruna and surfed a break called Playa de Sabon. The surf shop owner there is a great guy. I was renting equipment and he gave me a great deal. And then if you make it over to the Basque region you have Sopelana and Mundaka. Whatever you do make sure you eat a lot of food, stay out late, drink too much and have a blast!
Never made it that far north, but surfed Ericeira area and found it to be very positive, inviting place to surf as a surfer/traveler. Great vibe if you show respect and keep a low profile. Beautiful natural environment... beautiful, powerful surf... excellent food and drink options. Lisbon has two sides... an artful, historical, and exciting/fun side, and a seedy, sad side, with 1000-year-old structures defaced with graffiti. The drugs will find you...
Lisboa is an amazing city barry is curmudgeon def make it a point to visit ericiera, it has a similar spot density as the north shore, HI..... many many waves in the town, its 45 min south of supertubos waves like the cave, coxos and ribiera de ilihas make it amazing, there are literally dozens others in town, and you can check out the Tiago Pires Quicksliver flagship store and their baller-@ss skatepark the Portu-bros never really arise before 830-9 so the dawn patrols will be your private cold heaven
The "bros"?? All the guys I know seek girls when traveling.....You seek ...."bros"?? To each his/her own, I suppose. Were you waving the rainbow flag in downtown Lisbon??
Thanks for the info/advice guys. Much appreciated. I am hoping to document the trip pretty well so I will throw some pics up when I return. Trevolution might be coming with me as well. How interesting that would be..
Seriously? I hope that you're not easily talked into 3X OH Nazare with 20 knot cross-shore winds, lol. Have fun!!!
you need to use a vpn proxy to show a local/USA IP when you log on or someone else can do it for you. KR, what did trevey talk you into in the PNW? Trevey, after Portugal come out to the rock, theres a lineup or two over here looking for you!
