Do you guys know of any ways to practice turns/slashes on land or any workouts to strengthen the muscles used in explosive turns? Excluding indo boards and ripstick type boards.

Go buy youself a nice longboard skateboard. I have had great service at www.daddiesboardshop.com You can fully customize your board (trucks, bearings, wheels, griptape, etc) for relatively the same price as an off-the-shelf board.

Once you get a ride, go find a nice bank or hill to bomb. You will find yourself carving concrete in no time.

Thank you for banning him swellinfo. but yea longboarding down hills and trying to turn at the last possible second to avoid something has helped my frontside surfing considerably this winter, helps you get that pivot motion down

Explosive turns and carves are different, so carving a skateboard won't help much. To practice explosive turns on a skateboard you need to be a good and aggresive skater that's more than willing to donate blood to your purpose. Good luck

You are right only to an extent. You can't really practice turns but what you CAN do is practice bottom turning!!! Longboarding will help your bottom turn which will increase the power in your top turns. Also, its fun and its a good way to keep your legs strong. I can't wait until the snow melts so I can bomb some hills myself.

I also recommend a Carver skateboard. Check out their surfskate models with the C7 truck. I got one a few weeks ago and its sick. Totally worth the money. I can already tell an improvement in my surfing (turning, balance and what not). Now if we could only get some more waves...

You're right, but only half right. Longboard skate boarding will sort of help your bottom turn as will a street/ramp board and a good top turn comes from the bottom. You can't do d*ck for sharp fin blowesque turns on a longboard however, on a ramp/street board you most certainly CAN!!! Like I said, you need balls, skills and the willingness to bleed. You will never do front side/back side Ollie 180's, 360's or disaster slides on a longboard and that’s the closest you'll come to an "explosive" top turn on a skateboard. How about a nice fearless full speed power slide on an bank, riding a longboard with most of your weight on your back foot while sliding mostly the back wheels...Not happening. Furthermore, bombing hills (going full speed on a legit decline) won't do sh*t for your surfing. Ever get speed wobbles doing around 50mph, launch, fly like superman, tumble, slide, skip, spin, almost decapitate yourself on a guard rail, lose your shoes, loose everything in your pockets, shred your clothes, fracture ribs, hips, hands, vertebrae, come to a stop well over 100 feet later, and start bleeding out of every part of your body? You won't be surfing any time soon after that kind of carnage. The closest you'll come to surfing on a skateboard is on a half pipe or in a pool and you won't be riding a longboard, rip stick, or carve board.
Ps. I'm an advocate of skateboarding but it's dangerous to your health and you could severely hamper your surfing enjoyments with skateboarding injuries. I speak from experience fupafest and I aint no spring chicken. Don't be a d*ck, I'm just trying to help a brother out.

get a long skateboard (I have 2 Gravity boards) and start learning to pump and doing front and backside power slides. It's the same motion as pumping down the face and tailslides in the water.

Be careful, I know of a guy who had moved to Hawaii and was doing this down a hill, fell, hit his head and died on the spot. It's no joke, riding around your neighborhood is one thing, going too fast down a hill is a different story.

That's worst case scenario but remember a busted elbow or wrist will keep you out of the water for a while too.

Get a carver. I have a gravity makai and a loaded tan tien.. I can slide and pump on them fine but the carver is a whole different animal. Its the closest thing to surfing on land. You get the full motion of pumping and you really engage all the parts you use in the water. And once you break in the wheels (or slap on your broken in ones) you can slide around on that board to and really start fine tuning your moves. I have the carver resin as an FYI.

Also as stated, be careful! I broke my scaphoid bone 2 years ago when I was starting to longboard and tried to bust a slide down a hill. 3 months in a cast!!

I ride the bowls at Greenfield and CB skate parks on my Carver. It's a Taylor Knox model. You're not gonna be busting a kickflip over the hip or anything, but you're not doing that surfing either.

Those ripsticks work we'll and are cheap. The rhythm and the motion is exactly the same as pumping and once really moving the carves are the same as well.

Jerome Baker makes a mean ripstick, too. Not so sure it aides in much of anything, except relaxing. And hangovers.

Like everyone else said, a carver is the closest thing ive found to surfing on land. got one about a month ago and its been really fun. as far as strengthening muscles used for surfing, well thats your legs and core really. if you have access to a gym or some weights id be doing stuff like burpess, jump squats, squats, deadlifts, roman twists, any kind of cleans, basically some strength work combined with explosive movements.
