So, I traded in for a new tacoma last week and I was poking around on the net looking for accessories... this came up... And I MUST buy this... A key and personal belongings lock box for your tow hitch.... My truck key still has a seperate, electronic remote entry unit on the key ring, but its not part of the key. So I can still just put the key in my wetsuit or boardies in the water.... But most newer vehicles, like my wifes, have the remote entry and electronics built into the key itself, rendering it unavailable to take in the water... anyway, this just seems like a cool little surf accessory http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I66JEM/ref=dra_a_cs_mr_hn_it_P1004_100?tag=dradisplay-20
My buddy has one...he loves it. He holds a small amount of emergency cash and his key in there when we surf. Thing isn't all that big and then rubber cover is really snug. If I had a hitch I'd grab one...
My wife bought one for me for my B Day a couple weeks ago, haven't installed it yet, but will be this week. My friend has one and is how we found out about it. It's really cool and will prevent me from getting my keys stuck in the tail pipe of my Tahoe like I almost had happen to me a few times. Nothing worse than trying to your keys out and they won't budge and your hand is practically getting stuck too and it's getting dark and nobody around to help. Imagine sitting there with hand in tail pipe sitting on the ground in the dark and a Po Po rolls up asking "What chew doin down there boy!"
That looks like a good investment. I don't have a hitch so I use those magnetic hide a key things. I broke 3 or 4 of them this winter. the plastic lid part kept breaking off. There cheap, like 2 for 5 bucks or something. But still annoying. I just started hiding the key in my roof rack pads.
Be careful with who is watching you tho. Got my "whip took" with 3 boards and an extra wetsuit in it in OB that way... SOOOOO pissed... someone scoped me, even though I looked around and didn't see anyone, next thing you know my truck is in TJ and i lost everything in it too.... See thread when my stolen board ended up in an art museum a year later.
I saw that thread. I actually didn't think about that though good point. I only started doing the roof rack thing this winter, when no one was around. Im going to have to go get another hide a key or start putting the key in my wetsuit. Which leads me to a 2 quick questions. The hide a keys I was buying are cheap. I broke 3 or 4 this winter, iv broken at least another 2 or 3 in the past year. Anyone know of any heavy duty ones? The ones I had were like a rounded zippo shape. Egg shape I guess but flat. Then the top would flip open like a zippo. The hinge is what keeps breaking every time. And this one is a pretty dumb question but how does the wetsuit key pockets work? Iv always been hesitant to use it out of fear the zipper would unzip and id lose my key. That's probably very unlikely though.
Key pocket are usually tight enough to hold in the key (at least with a chest zip-xcel). As well the loop that it attaches to is a secondary line of defense. I've never had a problem Another option...LINK
Had one just like this on my truck. Totally worth every penny. It came in handy so many other times other then just surfing. I used to always keep a spare key in there - saved me many times when i locked my self out or even if a friend wanted to borrow the truck...
I leave my dog with doors unlocked. My dog is the end all of any depression that could happen upon me, her farts could kill.
Did y'all read any of the reviews for this item? One of the best things about Amazon IMO: Seems to me that having one of these is like having one of those fake rocks next to your front door that you hide a key in. It's like telling the would be thief "This is where I keep my key. I am currently occupied out in the water so have at it." Of course, an electronic key (chip or integrated fob) is not happy being submerged in salt water. In that case a better solution would be to have a conventional key made that you can take with you allowing you to open your door and keep your e-key stashed somewhere inside your vehicle. This may not be an option for some makes/models but should be doable for most common vehicles. Works for my Dodges. Beyond that, I think a regular old magnetic hide-a-key thing with an extra key would be better. Have it pre-stashed before you get to the beach so nobody observes you hiding it before you head out. But, to it's their own...
Thanks for the feedback, something to be aware of for sure. I guess for me it's better than just leaving them in the tail pipe like I do, which is even easier to steal, but so far nobody has taken me up on the offer HAHA
True. Good point. Lukcily, like I said, my truck key doesnt have a chip. The chip is seperate and can be left in the car. But I just can't take my wife's SUV to surf. Don't know why I ever would, but just saying.... I thought it was a cool idea, but then again, when you think it through, that is kind of a dead give away having it on there. I am not too worried about anyone's jacking my truck at Burkes or anything. There are cameras everywhere, and I rarely ever see sketchy people 'round here. The popo must round them up every week, drive out to the 95 and drop them all off.... But yeah, if I lived in a different area or in more or a major city, I would not use it i suppose.
I had one of these on my old truck. It works great, not only for surfing but also skiing or anything where you wouldn't want to loose your key while doing it. There is a locking mechanism that doesn't allow the unit to be removed from the 2"x2" hitch unless it is unlocked. It uses a 4 digit number lock I believe 0-9 on 4 different wheels. You set the code and lock it up. It works good, just don't forget to scramble the numbers before you walk away from your vehicle, and don't forget the code, I don't know if there is a master code that could be used to reset it. What is cheaper though is to go to your dealer and buy a key blank without the electronics in it. This will usually open the door of your vehicle only. That way you can lock everything in the car, but still carry your door key with you. I am not sure if that will work with the keyless push button starts.
