Hey all- Just a Lake Superior surfer trying to get some advice on Puerto Rico (Yeah, some of us surf in the lake). My wife and I are flying there next February, and we're looking for a place to stay for two weeks, best spots for mellow surf and mellow localism, and best sightseeing/activities while we're not wet. Any advice is much appreciated. Looking to go low cost, probably around $600-$800 for the two weeks for lodging. If you know of any great off the beaten path restaurants, things you can't miss when we're there, etc. let me know. Thanks! Ryan
hey Ryan, Rincon, on the west coast is likely your best bet. Its the most americanized area and the most popular area for surf tourism. The surf in Rincon gets very good, since the trade winds blow offshore there. If you have a rental car, then there are plenty of surfing areas to explore to the north of Rincon, if the surf gets flat there. There are lots of accommodations in Rincon and overall its pretty chill with some cool restaurants/bars. Outside of the restaurants/bars, there's not that much going on that I am aware of, but I've never really done any exploring away from the surf scene.
Rincon can be fickle... and crowded. Check Aguadilla... it has a couple breaks that go even when Rincon is flat. Ive stayed at a place called "Secret Spot" which rents houses or apts... I think they have a web site, but not sure- Google it.
Thank you for the info. If anyone has anymore we will certainly take it. How about board rental? Any shops down there that rent?
here's a surf shop in rincon: http://www.westcoastsurf.com/index1.html I'm sure they rent. Its a surfers town, you'll be able to find a board somewhere, if not there.
Be courteous, cautious, and you will be content. I've had numerous friends come back with horror stories of their rental cars being trashed etc. because it is very localized. Fortunately for my friends and I we stayed with our buddy's family who are Puerto Rican and they were are chauffeurs. We stayed for a couple weeks and surfed numerous beaches and had a blast just as you will. Not trying to scare you but be respectful to the fullest extent-stay away from the rock at Jobos and away from crowds and you will be A-OK.
I'd recommend surfers beach. If anything is breaking surfers will be. Jobos is fun, but very territorial, have to be respectful if you go there. Other than that Marias, Rincon, Wildos, and Dunes are all great spot with a northwest swell
Its better to fly into agudilla. Rincon has some fun waves from sandbars, reefs and points. Be careful when paddling out, not to paddle out into a large group of people. Pay attention to entry and exit points. Dont drop in on the spongers, they are fierce little people. Avoid the exposed rock that comes out of the water when taking off at marias haha. Be careful where you hid your key for your car when you go surfing. Be careful about getting to drunk there. when people pass out drunk, the locals do some pretty mean **** to them.. and puerto rican Mcdonalds will tear your stomache up!!! http://aurasurf.com/brisas.htm ^^^this is the guy who hooked us up with a place on the beach. He's a good guy and can hook you up with whatever kinda place your looking at staying in.
