I will be heading down to Puerto Rico the day after Christmas for a couple of days. I will be staying right outside of San Juan. What are the good surf beaches where I can go in the water and wifey can hang on the beach? How big does the surf get in the winter? How far of a drive are some of these places from San Juan? Thanks for the help

i'd recommend rincon or aguadilla. the surf will be some be either flat, chest high, or well over head and pounding. it always seems to be one of the three for me.

I think there are a few hundred threads on this site about this same question. Its much better to stay on the west coast and travel to see San Juan then the other way around.

There is good surf right in San Juan if that's where you are going to be. It's easy to find.

Exactly. And you could head east depending on conditions. There's some gnarly stuff directly east of SJ but it's worth taking the trip to El Yunque National rain forest if you've never been down there. It's only about 35 minutes away and directly north of it is Luquillo. There's a surf shop with rentals, a beach break but an even better reef break by the point (west of the surf shop). Conditions make or break this side of the island but it's worth checking out if there are waves and favorable winds.

I was just there last month, stayed at the Marriott not to far from the San Juan airport. There is a nice little break in between the Marriott and the Ritz Carlton, if the waves are rideable (which they were 3 of the 4 days I was there) you can't miss it becuase a number of locals will be in the lineup, all relatively friendly. Just watch the reef, it gets a bit shallow at points. I'd also try to bring your own board or check out a surfshop becuase the surf rentals near the Ritz only have those crummy foam boards. Hope you have fun, I'm going back second week in December.
