Hello. I would like to ride my quad fin mini simmons as a twin fin. Will the placement of the fin boxes work for a twin fin setup?

Also wondering if I need to buy new fins or if I can work with what I have. I am looking at Rasta keel fins ($100). Worth it--necessary?

Last issue is the placement of the two fins. Closest to the tail?

    Photos attached.

    Thanks!

Twin fin boxes would be pretty close to where your rear boxes are, only a bit closer to the rail. Definitely not where your front boxes are.

I'm not sure about this, but my guess is your rear Futures boxes are for fins with a 1/2" base and Rasta keels (for that matter all keels) have a 3/4" base so they wont even fit in the rear boxes of that board. The Futures keels would fit in your front boxes but IMO that is too far forward to really work as a twin.

But you know what - here's the thing - I've fooled around with four mini simmons ...quads, Keels, upright (Mark Richards) twins and it totally depends on what you like, and what waves you are riding. I like the upright (MR) twinnis better than the keels (which I find too stiff)...but then my mini simmons are all a lot shorter than that one...so yours might need more fin. Take two of the fins out, ride it and see what you think.

My guess is Vernor designed that board to be ridden as a quad, and with the boxes you have, it will go better as a quad.

Thanks Mitchell! I'll play around with it but I bet your right. Probably not meant to be ridden as a twin.

what's wrong with the performance as a quad? You're probably not going to enhance the performance on that wide a tail with just a set of twins.

If you're having problems turning, make sure your back foot is way back over the fin cluster when you turn. If that's difficult to do, consistently, maybe the board is a little too big for you(?) Looks like a super cool board (easy sell)...post a pic of the deck side, please?

More than anything just curious about how it could enhance performance-- or not. Thanks for the tip on putting the foot way back when I turn.

I put the tail pad as far back as I could for that reason.

It is a great board just wondering where else I can go with it. I am attaching a photo of the front side. The photo is from a couple months ago-- no tail pad.

I agree that it might be a little big for me. I was out over the weekend with a guy on a mini simmons the same size as mine that weighed 40 lbs more than me--he was flying down the line.

I weigh 175 so probably should be on a smaller board --maybe a 5'10.

    Thanks!

wow, that board is super duper sweet...but, yeah, 48 ltr vol for a 175 lb guy is way overkill. Even the 5'10 mini-sim is 40 Liters, so I'd say go even shorter, if you can.

Be nice if Vernor had a volume calculator...as it is, I probably wouldn't risk getting one of his boards until I talked to Vernor over the phone and he dialed in my specs (or, at least, volume).

I'm 180 lbs intermediate surfer and can't see myself going much over 35 liters.
