if you want to surf just like everyone else, ride the same thing everyone else is riding.

I think we are in agreement.

    Please forgive me NJ =):

I think the argument is: Do you want to surf like everyone else does? Like a pro?

Or do you want to surf differently, and by differently, I mean ugly

    Is that about right =)

I owned a pod for a short period. Granted, it was a size too big for me, but I still think the rails are too thick/corky on that model. It came with FCS AM1 fins and I hated how wide they made the board turn (mine didn't have quad boxes)...sold the board after a week of use.

no; uh maybe not. my point is in order to surf your absolute best cause you're going to HAVE TO
cause you've drawn KS means one must pick the surfboard that works the absolute best. and this
isn't one guy saying mine works best; its like, uh, all of them. voting with their talent if you will.

Those quotes were at NJ and his comments. I was just saying I think we are both making cases for thursters... I know every now and again, Kelly will ride a quad or someone else will, but all in all, the entire tour is riding the same kind of boards with the same kind of fin setups, because there are so few real world applications in which quads out performance the thrusters in good conditions. It happens, rarely, but show me the last guy who WON a contest on the ASP on anything but a thruster.

if your surfing is ugly, then your surfing is ugly. doesn't matter what you're riding or how many fins it has.

NJ: i know brother, I know. I just figured since we dusted off this old thread, not sure why.... But I figured we could spark up the old debate.... It's all good now. Rob has always had great style and tries all kinds of thing. He is actually my favorite surfer, ever really. But with that being said, back in his competitive days, he would never be out on one of those setups for an event.

Great last pic. I have nothing to say for that one. The picture says it all. He must have just landed a floater.

Anyway, I think we all decided a long time ago, that to each their own. Certain setups are better in certain conditions, while some people prefer only one thing....

We are all creatures of habit. Some people love surfing for the exploration. They love playing with different equipment etc.... But after years and years of thruster surfing and development, the second I stepped on a quad or twinny, I was completely out of my comfort zone and my surfing followed suit. It was a whole different thing. My style wasn't lining up. Everything that I had worked so hard to developed unraveled for a moment and it makes you think, if it aint broke, don't fix it. I don't want to have to adjust everything I do in the water all over again, to cater to a new kind of fin setup.

Again, read my post from 3 years ago when we originally had this conversation. I love my quad, in certain situations. I really do. It took weeks and month of FORCING myself to take it out to different waves, in different conditions and finally, I got over the hump and figured out how to make it work well.... But now I don't have the luxury of living in a wave rich place, where I can tool around everyday, surfing something different every day... Now, its like, okay, there are a few waves per week, mostly nothing of consequence, so how am I going to milk every last inch of these things... Certainly doesn't spark my interest to try new things. Not one bit.

yea, it's all in good fun, brotha.

i guess i'm the exact opposite of you...after traveling around & living places that have great waves, i needed, & still need, the novelty of experimentation to get me excited to paddle out in marginal surf. i feel like i get stale, riding the same boards all the time. it may not be "good" for my surfing from a performance or progression standpoint, but it makes it more fun to paddle out when it's 2-3ft & sideshore when i know i've gotta concentrate a bit to figure out how to make this board go where i want it to go.
even now, when i've finally got a 3 board bonzer quiver dialed in, i'm thinking "you know what would be fun? a parallel quiver of quads!" & figuring out how to make that happen w/out pissing off the wife.

what do you mean? can't you just take out the center fin of the bonzer? instant quad or twin right there. or if removable take out the ventrals and you have a single.

    you're welcome.
