Hey guys, really trying to find my standard short board size. While I've been surfing a while and different board sizes I've never found my perfect one. I'm 6'0 and about 185 pounds, probably be about 5-10 more in a little. I've had boards from 5'8, 5'9, 5'11, 6'1, 6'2 and 6'3. Problem is, I can't find the volume in between to give me what I like. I really don't like tall board. The 6'3 seemed like to much but it had a little to much volume, floated me really well but was cumbersome to use cause it was really to big. I like 5'11 and 6'0 but I'm not sure if I can find a board that size thats not going to have to be huge. Anybody my size have any suggestions?
Don't just consider length. Thickness and foil have more to do with volume than length. Look at what's written on the board... it's usually length, width, and thickness, in that order. If you're comfortable with the 5'11 and 6'0 in terms of length, a bit thicker foil throughout can bump up the volume considerably without feeling "huge." A good shaper can dial in your volume. Bring him a couple boards and take a few minutes to explain what you're looking for. Crowning the deck, nudging out the width, foiling a bit thicker... we're talking fractions of an inch here... it can be done.
Get a custom.......You and the shaper can get what you want. Other things to include in your design include experience, strength and how much or little you want to have to paddle to ride. Also the surf you like to ride. Some people would rather ride a sloped wave rather than steeper faces so make sure you tell him exactly what you like as well as your style of surfing.
