It's called the dream tour for a reason, to put the best surfers on the best waves possible. I know NY has it's days just as Jersey and the rest of the east coast, but we know they are at times hard to come by. Look at the rest of the tour spots, trestles, pipe, chopes, bells, j-bay and then boop, Long Island??? Sticks out like a sore thumb screaming, marketing! Smart business move, but it doesn't seem to be comparable to the rest of the tour. All that being said, I hope a hurricane swell comes and makes me eat my words.

what does the data say? anybody know the stats on that time window? I know that you can just about bank on having contest-able surf in the OBX between sept 1 and sept 15.

    Straight from Surfline.

"Surfline.com, the world's leading forecaster of wave and surf conditions, conducted an independent long term 15-year wave study for western Long Island, New York, summarizing that September 4-15 is one of the most consistent time periods for sizable surf in the region. In addition, independent local feedback supports these findings, with September typically averaging 3+ hurricane swells, typically with at least one 3-4 day swell. Surfline.com is the official forecaster for The Quiksilver Pro New York."

I surfed Cocoa Beach probably the same exact day that your buddy was talking about, had no idea Slater was surfing up at the pier, didn't find out there was a surf comp going down till i got back to where we were staying in Orlando, if I remember correctly, i think some kid from FLA beat Slater that day...but believe me, the waves were crappola!

True dat. Does anyone remember the Japan contest days? I remember reading article about a bunch of WCT'rs threatening to boycott the event the following year because there were NO waves. They actually drove boats past the lineup to try to create some dribble to ride.

Mid 80s ASP contests in OCMD, New Jers etc were always in the summer and guys like Wes Laine and Kong were pretty big dudes to grovel it out in 2-3 foot slop. Embarassments like that were what led to the dream tour in the first place.

I just got the new Transworld issue and there's a quick pro new york booklet in there. It's pretty cool, but there's gotta be like 5 pictures of Balaram in there, seems like they are really pushing him as the NY surf poster boy. Hopefully he does well but if they are really putting the weight of NY on his back I can see the pressure getting to him. Hopefully the east coast boys do well though...

On a side note, Chopes is going off for the Billabong Pro!

It should be insane the next few days. I was fortunate enough to watch the free surf this afternoon.

I also caught the free surf session. Stoked to see Bruce Irons out there killing it. Some of the angles they have from the channel really give you an idea of just how much of a freak that wave is. I would absolutely love to be there just watching it work.

Yeah man it would would be sick to chill on one of the boats in the channel on a big day out there, just watching guys get shacked one after another being so close to the action.
