Just heard this. Can anyone confirm? I guess the hurricane damage in long beach was too much.

just heard the same thing...I know it would not be a decision made for the surfers, but they must be stoked to not have to come grovel after getting shacked out of their skulls at Teahupoo. That wave just made 98% of the waves on the planet look boring.

No its been confirmed that is all be cancled Unsound who is working with quicksilver to put on the event has gained info that the contest and festival has been axed due to Irene's damage to Longbeach over the weekend that the city just dont have the resources to have everything ready for the contest. Many Pro's have canceled and are not attending the contest aswell . Shea Lopez via twitter confirmed the contest is off.

Quiksilver Pro New York Surf Contest Will Run: Update from Long Beach
    August 30, 2011 | ASP International

LONG BEACH, New York / USA (Tuesday, August 30, 2011) - An important update from Long Beach — Quiksilver is working closely with the City of Long Beach to preserve the heart of the ASP World Tour surf contest scheduled to start on Sunday, September 4 in light of the impact of Hurricane Irene and concerns for the Long Beach community, which suffered significant damage from the storm. The Quiksilver Pro is scheduled to start its 11-day “holding period” on Monday, September 5. The Quiksilver Pro Trials presented by Unsound Surf will run on Sunday, September 4.

The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.

The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.

so if the music and festivals are canceled, theres just going to be surfing then? which cant be that bad considering this may be the first and last time that the ASP comes to the east coast...but since this would be my 1st, what is the festival part like?? i know that the music is self explanatory, but i dont get what the festival part means...thanks!

    Not cancelled!

My understanding is that the peripheral activities have been cancelled. Halfpipe, motocross, bands, etc..... But the actual surf competition is still on.

... how about you go on their website for the event and click on the tab labelled "live"... they had heats running all day in ****ty waves so they can do the important heats in this weeks up coming swell...plus why are you all so negative about going from teahupoo to NY? this is the east coast. this is where we live. ive surfed puerto rico and cali and towns of places and this is still my favorite spot on its best days. get your head outta your ass and stop being so pretentious. youre not on the world tour so stop complaining. they get paid to do what you would love to do. you just jealous
