I was previously going through some things of mine and found a "surf journal" if thats what you want to call it. Back in the day when I was a young buck, I kept somewhat of a log after every session, I would right down swell direction, size, winds, who I was out with, epic rides and so on....Basically trying to describe the whole day.... I stopped writing years ago, but reading it now it's prettyy funny stuff, not only that but I actually remember most swells! It makes me want to start writing my sessions down again! Anyway I was just wondering if anyone has done this.... It really is pretty cool reading back and being like "I rememer that day!" If you havent I recommend it! Cheers!
I started doing this around mid summer this past year just to get a good log going of certain spots with different swell directions/periods etc. I haven't kept up with it at all lately but maybe I'll get it going again. Could be a pretty useful tool and fun to look back on like you said.
I do this, but definitely not as much as I'd like (I'm lazy). It's definitely fun to go back and read what you've written down about a session months later and be able to remember the specifics of the waves you got that day. I've found that doing this is also good for figuring out 'what spot works best when' if you include the swell data. It's hard for me to keep up with this too much in the winter though; after getting out of and rinsing my suit I've usually moved on to doing other things...
I did this around the first or second year I started surfing. Still have the journals. It's amusing, yet strangely somewhat embarissing to read my descriptions of my sessions. I even used to try to take a pic of the day. I wrote nothing useful in terms of spots, just cheesy descriptions of conditions, how I surfed and my surfing milestones that day.
I do this with my gopro footage.. if I happen to have the camera with me that particular session. I will say watching footage from over a year ago is sort of a trip...
Agreed! It's also funny watching footage of yourself from years before. You realize how much you've progressed and all. Really fun to watch and a good laugh sometimes!
I think this is a great tool for many reasons, i.e. what spots work for what conditions. I kept a log with the smartphone last year so I had a pic to go with the log. My reason to keep a log was only to keep track of how many days I rode in the year but it ended up being much more than that.
i try to get a pic every time i go out of the waves and if someone is around I ask them to try and grab one of me
