My buddy is going to Nosara in 6 days and he is a pretty good surfer and was wondering if there are any good reef breaks there with some consequence? He's researched the area pretty well and knows about all the beach breaks and what not but noticed that there didnt seem to be any advanced type waves or reefs. He's surfed Salsa Brava on the carribean and loved that wave.(great wave) Anyone know of anything??
Nosara is mostly beach break. Close by is Playa Negra and that's a reef break. Also Avellanas is mostly beach break but there are a few small rocks.
As a frequent visitor of Negra, and I'm saying this in a friendly way, stay away from Negra if you are coming from Nosara. It is not a close drive, probably at least 1 1/2 hours. So unless you wake up at 4am so you are there at first light, you are most likely going to arrive when every other person does coming down from Tamarindo. The wave has 1 take-off spot, the locals and regulars sit on it, and it will be a wasted trip. honestly not saying this out of being a jerk, Negra is a place you have to be at very early, at the end of the day, or sit there all day long waiting for those brief half our periods when the crowd disappears (and hopefully the wind isn't onshore). If there is size, the outside sandbars at Nosara should be more than enough for your friend, and if he talks to some locals, they might be able to turn him on to some reef/rock breaks in the area.
What he said. And, it's curious that if your amigo is such a white-hot surfer ISO reef breaks then why is he going to Nosara-Guiones, which anyone will tell you is straight up beachbreak? Or was the point here just to tell us what a white-hot surfer your bro-ster is & he's merely deigning to appear at a beachbreak?
