Oh yea... I remember. This pretty much summed up his attitude to his competitors, and employees back in the day.

I'll also add that... IMPO... the two best things that ever happened to the surfing world were the birth and death of Clark Foam.

Because companies started using new technologies instead of Clark Foam and 50 year old antiquated technology. Many believe better boards=better surfing. Necessity became the mother of invention.
Unfortunately when Clark Foam folded average board prices went up about $100-$200 and never seemed to come back down. Good for surfboard industry, bad for surfboard buyers.

There are quite a few foam companies out there now. Less than youd think, but it now allows for variety and also people can try out different foam types, companies, densities, etc. We can even go one further as to try to source products regionally or thereabouts. For instance I just started shaping boards using a little known blank builder out of VA called Common Surf. His blanks are getting better. Had quite a few little air bubbles in the finished blank this last time, but otherwise they are good foam.
So yes, the death of Clark was very good in a way for many people. I helped open the eyes to the industry that better equipment can be made.

Barry...can you clarify this quote for me...do you mean Grubby control of the market or quality of his product?

If the latter...US blanks is a far superior product and improved upon Clark's formula...the aussie blanks from what i understand have an incredible product... I agree with stink...the changed just improved the overall market...

Ruled their day, yes. They were the only game in town.
Today there are better options and far superior products.

Maybe someone can provide a link from a well-known and experienced shaper (not Roy) that has gone on record expressing his opinion on this issue?
