So I recently found out I'll be going to Hawaii for a work trip and staying on the big island, in Wiakoloa Village. I'll have a few free days to rent a car and go find some waves. Any advice on a good shop to rent a board from or an easy spot to paddle out would be a big help as I won't have a ton of free time.

Not looking for any secret spots, just trying to find the path of least resistance given the limited time to get out...

I forget where I went on da big island, because that was million years ago during my honeymoon. Alls I can say is yes, there are board rentals, but you'll find a lot of surf tech garbage. Do a web search and plan accordingly. If you are going to be at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in the winter, do a little google map search and you will see there's a nice point reef setup right next to that mecca of a tourist trap. it can get world class, and you will need to find it yourself. shallow shallow gnarly reef, so unless you got Kona-kine loc'd out island feet, invest in some kook reef walkers or else you will tear your sh** up. think fire coral encrusted lava rocks.
