I'm reaching out for recommendations on epoxy resins? I have not done epoxy repairs before. For a permanent fix I was planning to use a Ding All epoxy repair kit. It is a small crack on the corner of the tail. Is fiber glass cloth always recommend or is the epoxy mixture sufficient for small cracks? How does suncure compare? Thanks for taking the time to read and any help would be much appreciated!
small cracks can be worse than you think. Make sure there are no soft spots on or near the crack (if so, you have a delam and need to remove the squishy glass before repair) Epoxy repairs are the exact same as polyester resin. On very small cracks, no cloth is needed. Sun Cure is fine...but the fiberfill version is better for even very small dings.
Small crack and dings, Sun Cure is great, I've been using it for years. Anything substantial, you will want something better or a professional if you don't feel comfortable.
https://www.phixdoctor.net/dura-resin-tube-2-25-oz.html This stuff works great and cures in a minute or less when exposed to sunlight. Also comes with the sandpaper you need.
that's probably fine for tiny dings, if you already have it lying around...but I wouldn't buy it specifically for surfboard ding repair. How does it saturate glass cloth? Even fiberfill Sun Cure (Solarez, Dura Rez, etc) can be used with cloth (just have to make sure you only put it on top of cloth and let the resin strain through)
I always recommend using surfboard specific two-part epoxy and cloth when doing ding repairs of any size. The only thing I use the fiber fill stuff for is travel or emergency repairs in the middle of a session. Order this from Greenlight... http://greenlightsurfsupply.com/products/epoxy-surfboard-sup-ding-repair-kit?variant=1052046747 ... and do it right.
The corner of the tail is a spot guaranteed to get whacked again and again. Its a spot that is really prone to improper repairs just coming back, and back worse. If you want the repair to be permanent (or close to it) you have to sand down the bad (cracked) glass and use two layers of cloth in the repair, properly wetted out with resin. Be warned: getting cloth to wrap around the damaged tail corner is tricky. I use bigger pieces of cloth than what is needed, and use masking tape to tightly wrap the cloth around the corner, then wet it out, let it set up, sand down the edges, brush on more resin over the entire repair, sand again.
Take it to a really good ding repair arteest. As cheap as a ding kit and and no mess. Then you will never have to scrape salt crust out of her wound ever again. Now it is your turn to let us know you are in Philly and no good ding repair arteests (?) nearby. In that case never mind and go get your finger sticky.
