I'm trying to decide if I should fix this or have someone do it for me. Please add any suggestions or how to go about fixing it. It's on the left side and there is just a small lip.
If no damage to the fiberglass I would give that a light sanding over the crack. Mix a tiny bit of epoxy. put just a little cooking resin over the crack to hot coat it. Sand once done. You should be water tight by the looks of it but a quick coat of resin over the top will be insurance.
if you don't feel comfortable mixing epoxy take it to the shop and ask if you can do it there. Drop the guy a 10 dollar top. That's a 10 minute repair.
Use real epoxy not suncure. Suncure won't bond well there. just DON'T put too much "glue". Go light on the glue. Worst case scenario is you get resin in the pocket for the fin tabs and the fins won't fit. That could be a disaster if you put too much and it hardens/fills in the pocket. DO NOT get resin in the pocket.
Ok. Those small tears are worse than the crack in the finbox. You still look water tight. The repair steps are still the same. Give her a quick sand. Mix your resin. Carefully lay a light coat over. Sand again. Depending on how the first coat goes/how bad those cracks/tears in the glass are you could put a second hot coat. The fact that you posted this here makes it apparent you have never done any repairs yourself/feel uneasy working with the fiberglass. It is a simple and easy repair and that looks like a nice board so if you don't feel comfortable then find a friend/mentor who is competent and do it together. If your old enough drink a couple beers while you do it and enjoy. After you see how simple repairs can be you will never go back.
Thank you. I have done numerous repairsand shaped a few boards but just nothing around the fin boxes and I read some places that it's not worth messing up and to just take it in. So, I judged wanted some input. Thanks again for your help
Ok cool. I was wrong sorry. You should be good. Dont mess with cloth for that and just "laminate" it. Fin Box repair isn't so bad but it can get tricky. FCS 1 was a pain because you had to make sure the two tabs lined up perfectly. FCS 2 is much better because its one plug. I think the reason people say to bring it in is because the challenge isn't so much setting the box.....it's getting the fin to sit perfectly and symmetrically when in the board. In your case you dont need to worry about fiddling with the box it is already set perfectly...all you are doing is laminating the hairline cracks. So no need to fret. Just don't get resin in the pocket for the fin.
