Hi, i was looking around for answers because i know everyone hates reposts, but im going to just post it anyway. So I receive a free 1998 9'6" Jacobs Longboard which i dearly, dearly love to ride. It is more geared towards a noserider from what i can tell by my knowledge in board shape. The current glass on the board is obviously old and from the looks of it has not been taken care of. It has many patches and dings and what not. I was getting qoutes from some surfshops for a complete glass job (strip it and reglass it). While it seems very tempting to do it with qoutes ranging in the 250-300 range, i really would like to tweak the shape of the board. As i said it is a noserider style longboard, but with the NJ winter swell coming around, i really want to get more of a performance style longboard. YES i want to surf winter swell on a longboard. I already get enough crap about it so i dont need anymore here. Ive been bashed and made fun of for it on instagram so please just save it. The way i see it, people surfed big surf with longboards before they did on shortboards. So please no hate. So to wrap it up, the question is : Is it possible to tweak the shape of my current nose rider board and make it more of a performance type longboard? Please don't hurt the Jacobs! This could very well have been shaped by Hap himself. Get it repaired, sanded and re-glossed and ride it some more or pass it along. If you do choose to sell it put that money towards a performance longboard.
Please don't strip it. If you do you will easily loose 1/4" or more of foam thickness and after you fine sand it another 1/8". On a board originally 3" thick shape you will have only 2 5/8" thick blank only suitable for a childs longboard if you are lucky and much less if it is delamed. If you want to shape a board go ahead and get a blank and do it. You will be wasting a longboard if you strip it because I'm sure it will end up in the trash. You won't have enough room to tweak anything and a lot of rides will be wasted on the old tank. Even an old delamed and dinged log is a ton of fun. Just get a blank suitable to what you have in mind and go for it. It's not that hard and less than paying a ding guy to rehab it. Even if it is fixed up the delamed foam goes way down deep and will be back like cancer. Take it out on those winter Jersey swells and have a friend record you folding it like a taco in a pit. Ride that girl and pretend it's a demolition derby car and take out some of those angry young men on shortboards in a furious smoke, steam and acid fueled firebomb while screaming "FREEDOM!" as loud as you can. And GoPro record it please. Cheap entertainment at its best.
@Johnburns You sound like the guy at the surfshop. I read a lot about Jacobs as a company and i guess the board has some value behind it. It may just reglass it then. Should i reglass it here for have a shop do it? ive never done it before and wanna try but i dont want to mess with a nice board if thats what i have, and btw it is a handmade board just not sure if it was shaped by hap
i would not re-shape the board first, simply given its credentials. second, would you be re-shaping? if not, a shaper will charge you good money to do it. your probably better of finding a new HP log. put the jacobs on the shelf orif you need the cash, sell it to someone who is into it. how did you get it for free?
a guy i used to work for was from california originally and he is very wealthy, he now lives here in NJ and brought it with him from cali. Was laying on the side of his house and when i asked him if i can get it off him he said sure just take it.. along with the 12 dollars cash he was paying me to clean dog ****... What can i get for this board if i fix it up nice? Considering the price for a new glass job, could i make anything off it?
i would take it to someone like the BeachHouse Classic Board Shop in bayhead NJ and ask them that question.
Get a job kid, you're not gonna get rich off your free restored board. If you have a board that you can ride well you need to understand that is worth more than $300 you can get on craigslist.
I have a job im not trying to get rich but i am in college on a tight budget and will make a quick buck where a quick buck can be made.
If you take all the glass off, down to the blank, you have a good chance of wrecking a useable board. As others have stated, either sell it and use the $ towards the board you want, or just take the gloss/hotcoat off and re-do that with a deep pigment. The times I have seen an attempted re-shape have never ended up with the person being glad they did it, mostly they end up trying to salvage a MUCH smaller board out of it. Beach House is hosting a swap meet on Sept. 29. You could bring it there and get an idea of what someone would pay for it, maybe even trade/sell it on the spot. Good luck either way.
yes the beachhouse boardswap is this sunday. perfect time for you to take some offers on it or ask those dudes what it would cost to fix up and its value. odds are you'll see boards boards in much worse condition than yours there, and they sell. the beachhouse boardswap is a good one, i try to go every spring and fall.
