Carl would be the guy already out for a DP just when you thought you were going to have it to yourself for a few minutes. I will miss his company, his appreciation for life, and his simple desire and pleasure of taking in all that Mother Nature dishes out (waves, wildlife, morning sky, stillness, etc...) so early in the morning.

Thanks so much for this post. Carl was a dear friend…his human experience has ended but his spirit lives on in all of us whose lives he touched. There will be a memorial and paddle out, as were his wishes. Details will follow. Live each day as if it were your last. Hold yourself accountable to being the best person you can be each day for who knows which day will be your last here.

    Rest in Peace....Doc.

Nothing like being able to surf, literally, till the day you die.

I hope I can be so lucky.

I thank the powers that be, that there were waves, good to great waves, the past several days, that enabled him to enjoy what he enjoyed most....surfing.

As Dr.Bill said, there will be a paddle out. Stay tuned for details.

Sad to hear a surfer and family man go so young. I hope his family can stay strong and take solace in the fact that Doc Carl Butler did so much in his time on earth.

Seems like he appreciated moments both small and large.

Good luck to you guys, and good luck to his family.

So sad. I traded waves with him a few times through this recent bit of swell. Please keep us updated on the paddle out for him. RIP Carl, you will be missed.

Oh man so sorry to hear. I didn't know him personally but I'm fairly sure I have surfed with him on occasion.

Hey Ryan or Dr.bill- do you happen to know the cause at such a young age?

Carl died of a sudden and massive heart attack. A memorial paddle out in honor of and to celebrate his life will be held at Loch Arbour Village Beach 9am on August 2nd.
