My best friend of 17 years is now in heaven. I couldn’t watch him suffer anymore and had to let him go. It’s the hardest thing I have ever done.

Bentley was the smartest, funniest, most loving dog I have ever known. His spirit is unbroken and will live on forever. The little guy was too stubborn and had so much fight he wouldn’t go until we were ready to let go. Today was the last day I was able to physically hold him, but I will hold him in my heart for eternity.

RIP Bentley aka Billy aka BFF

Thanks guys, he was spoiled rotten and had an amazing life. It’s too bad pets don’t live as long as humans but I wouldn’t want him to live without Mom and Dad either, so it’s probably better this way, as much as it hurts.

That really sucks. It can be brutal deciding when you have to do right by your trusty companion and ease him to the other side. You did the right thing. Peace and waves my friend.

I was doing tai chi on the beach early the other morning, and an old guy was walking up the beach, with his dog. It was a standard poodle, and she was walking more slowly and more gingerly than the old fella.

I asked him as they passed by, "hey, did you get her when you were a kid?" He started laughing pretty hard, then said " I wish they lasted as long as we did."

I appreciate that. We did it in the comfort of our home, in our arms, with light jazz music playing. I made sure to give him one last bath after one last walk in the yard. The mobile vet was very compassionate and made sure he didn’t suffer. He is being cremated on his favorite bed. We were able to make a clay imprint of his paw in the oven.

Class & compassionate & deeply caring all the way, DP. You & your wife were awesome parents to that wonderful guy Bentley. Don't think he didn't brag about you guys to the other 4-legged miracles in the 'hood, neither.

Terrible & gut-wrenching. To make that brutal decision & put an end to his brief suffering, shows the soulful people that y'all are: Bentley is first & foremost.

I'll only have one question for St Peter at the gates, if I ever get that far: why did you make dogs have such short lives compared to humans when the dogs deserved to live forever?

Sorry for your loss brother. I know the pain... Lost my dog last year to cancer. He was my best friend. Letting go was one of the hardest thing I have ever had to do. He’s always here with me in spirit, and I know your pup will be too.

Be happy for the memories you shared and the great life you were able to afford him. Carry his legacy onwards with grace and gratitude! He’d want you to.

Tough call indeed. He was diagnosed with kidney failure back in May, plus he had Vestibular disease aka old dog syndrom for 3 years, and he was nearly blind as a result and lately was having seizures. He stopped eating in recent days, and wouldn’t drink water the last couple days. He was weak and hardly able to stand / walk. The light in his eyes went dim, so I knew it was time.
