 Buddies and me were messing around trying to catch something out there today and our car got broken into. Phones, wallet and my wife's ring were all stolen. Where can you keep your car key with you if you only got your surfboard and towels? We surfed a new area and is this something that happans all the time? Any tips?

Sux man - sorry to hear. Where were you surfing ?

Some boardshorts are made with little pockets with a string to safely attach a key to.

Fortunately, in Delmarva, where I live, I've never heard of any of my fellow surfers getting their cars broken into. But I know this has been happening more often in SoCal. I always lock my car and hide the key in a convenient place.

i always keep my key in my boardshort pocket or hang it on the dune fences. ive had friends get broken in to also so i know it sucks. i always try to leave as much valuable stuff at home. like just bringing my license and not my whole wallet.

really sorry to hear that, i hate bandits. that guy will get what's coming to him i'm sure. if you have a car key that has some electronic parts and are worried about water getting into it, just use 2-3 ziplock bags before you stuff it in your pocket/wetsuit. works for me.

hiding your key works too but there's always a chance that someone saw you stuffing it underneath a rock or whatever and you would never know until your stuff was gone. maybe your whole car too if you get robbed by a real asshole. be careful, i hate hearing stories like this.

    key

Get a piece of synthetic laundry line and tie it into a circle that will barely fit around your head--a key necklace. You'll never have to worry about someone finding it and it's impossible to lose.

It sucks that it happened but if you had a truck you could just put all your keys and wallet underneath the bed liner if its the kind, you can remove it works for me and my freinds.

    Glass for Gravel.

I'm hitting spot to spot all up and down the beach, i dont think it would have mattered if you locked your doors or not because if you take a look, theres about a few hundred bunches of window glass shattered on the ground as gravel. Best be glad you didn't lock your door cause you would have had to shovel more money out. Did they break your glove compartment to get it?

    Damn...

People are really bold...I was at the beach a few weeks ago when the weather was getting nicer and the "summer folks" were starting to come back. Someone actually went into my BODYBOARD BAG and took my wallet. It was my fault, I had forgotten to take it out of there - but to open the bag and take it out.....

    Now that's bold.

There are plenty of reef shorts/boardshorts out there with key pockets, and wetsuits have them also.

I'm lucky, though - I just shove the key into my bra.... :D

I've been lucky enough to not have anything jacked since my skimboard when i was 8. I've left my windows down and all my stuff in plain view in my car numerous times and nothings happened, but it helps that its a gated beach access...If i go somewhere else though, i take the key off the ring and put it in my boardshorts.

there are also those little magnetic key holders that you can stick under your car, but i'd rather just keep the key with my stuff on the beach so that the person would have a harder time finding the car (assuming you take off the clicker)

If you have a car with a trailer attachment. They make a sort of safe, thats got a 4 digit code that slides in and out. Made for car keys for surfers. I've seen them somewhere, but I forget the price.

Only can be put it/taken out when its open. Like a trailer hook. The metal bar goes through the back of it when its open then you slide the safe part onto it and lock it with your keys in it. Also a good idea if you're clumsy and lock your keys in your car a lot :p

Sux to hear, but there are a # of things you can do for this other than what's been called out here. When I lived in San Diego this was a constant problem for a lot of us. Hiding a key, or I think one person said something about putting it on the dune fence is suicide if you live anyplace other than some of the ritzy communities out here that won't let regular people in, but if you interact with the rest of the world, look out for stolen cars. They make a device that is the same sort of thing as the key safes used by real estate agents for securing keys of the houses they sell. You have seen them I'm sure, a little steel box that has pass buttons on it, push in the buttons as per your combination, open and there is your key. It clips to the window so that it faces out and then you simply roll up the window to secure.
A less expensive option that I used for a short time, (and also used very successfully with my motorcycle when I could find someone else to get the boards to the water) is a simple magnetic key box that I could sneakily stick up under a bumper or fender well while I was putting on a wettie or some other pre-surf activity... There are some other devices available that are pretty tricked out.

Of course, the #1 thing to do is to use the little string/elastic thingy for holding keys. Or even maybe just use the pocket they put on your boardies. I've been noticing that they're now putting little zip pockets on wetties! Not anything too big, but I did see someone wearing a full suit that had a small zip pocket on the right leg, just above the knee. It was a Rip Curl wettie I am pretty sure, but I think the others are probably doing the same thing.

If you have a key that is water sensitive, get the valet key and use it. (If you do have electronics in your key, chances are you are driving something that for sure should have a valet key come with it.) They are good because it only works to open the driver's side door lock and the ignition. That way if someone does get your key, they won't be going all through your trunk or glovebox or that sort of thing... good luck...
